's inquiry committee has released a report which suggests that the fresher was singled out for ragging
. As per the report issued by the committee, the 17-year-old was selectivyely chosen for pre-planned ragging activities, which also included possible sexual abuse.
In the report submitted by the committee, the probe panel stated that they have narrowed two possible reasons behind the student's death - "a case of an abetted incident and a case of homicide".
On August 9, 2023, a 17-year-old student fell from the second-floor balcony of the hostel. The Bengali Honours student was allegedly trying to get away from his seniors, who were staying in the hostel illegally, during ragging. The 17-year-old succumbed to his injuries the next day in a hospital.
The inquiry committee, despite the report, has not been able to conclusively ascertain the reason behind the students' tragic fall.
"As it seems, he (the victim) was singled out for ragging, which was carried out in a systematic planned manner, having deliberately isolating him for severe ragging, while the rest of his batch-mates were far from him attending a hostel general body meeting," stated the report issued by the committee.
The report also adds that the first-year student was ragged in phases on the evening of his death. As per the report, the first ragging session took place at 6:30 PM, where 6 to 7 freshers were taken to the room and forced to shout "highly objectionable, sexist, and abusive” words towards the female residents in the hostel.
The next session took place around 9 PM and 10:45 PM, where the student was forced to put his signature on a letter addressed to the Dean of Students, which was against a day scholar of the Department of Bangla.
“After this..., the freshers, except the boy, were asked to attend an all hostellers General Body (GB) meeting which was held at the playground adjacent to A1 block at around 11 pm,” the report added.
Around 11:30 PM, students shared they heard a loud cry from someone at the A-2 Block of the hostel. One of the students who rushed to the spots after the cry stated he saw the boy running away naked, shortly after which two- three seniors pulled him out. The report by the inquiry committee also added that the minor had been "severely abused sexually".
A large number of them found the victim lying on the road adjacent to the A-2 block in a naked condition in supine position. At that time the victim was found profusely bleeding from nostrils, ears and mouth and possibly from the back of the head,” the report said. The students who found him, covered the lower part of his body with a towel and took him to the hospital, where he died.
