At least two people have passed away after drinking tainted water in Chinnenahalli village, located in Madhugiri taluk of the district, according to Home Minister G Parameshwara on Thursday. The deceased, Chikkadasappa (76) and Peddanna (72), died at a hospital on Wednesday. They were among nearly a hundred individuals who fell sick on June 10 after consuming water from an overhead tank and a drinking water unit during a village fair.
Parameshwara, who also serves as the district in-charge Minister, visited the hospital today to inquire about the health of those receiving treatment. He explained that a temple fair was organized in Chinnenahalli, where over a hundred people experienced vomiting and diarrhea due to contaminated water. Some sought treatment at private hospitals in Madhugiri, Koratagere, and Tumakuru, while others were shifted to Tumakuru hospital by the district administration.
Regarding reports of additional deaths, including that of a three-year-old girl at a private hospital, Parameshwara stated that officials are investigating and will gather information about all the deaths linked to this incident.
The Minister disclosed that the village's Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) and waterman have been suspended for failing to take necessary precautions. He explained that water connection work was ongoing, and damage caused by a JCB machine to water pipes resulted in the contamination. Some test reports have been received, and more are awaited for further details.
Many individuals, including children, are still receiving treatment at the hospital, Parameshwara added. Taking this incident as a "lesson," he announced plans to convene a meeting of senior officers to review the district's water supply system.
