Why Renaming Ramanagara Is Not Just A Name Change: Political Math Behind The Move

DK Shivakumar once again submitted a proposal to rename Ramanagara district to Bengaluru South, a year after the idea was initially proposed. The move will not change anything geographically but it does have political significance. Here's the political math behind the name change proposal.

The proposal to rename Ramanagara has once again gained momentum

Bengaluru: The drive to rename Ramanagara district gained momentum on Tuesday as Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and others submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah proposing the same. They have proposed to change the name to Bengaluru South district.
Apart from Shivakumar, the petition has 13 signatories, including transport minister Ramalinga Reddy and former Bangalore Rural MP DK Suresh, Shivakumar’s brother. The Congress leader said that he renaming aims to use the global reputation of Bengaluru to help the district.
“It is the aspiration of people and our plan that the global reputation, sovereignty and glory of Bengaluru should benefit Ramanagara, Magadi, Kanakapura, Channapatna and Harohalli taluks,” the petition stated.
However, the renaming of the district has deep political significance attached to it for various reasons, one of them being the upcoming Channapatna assembly bypoll.

Why Rename Ramanagara?

DK Shivakumar said this initiative was taken keeping in mind the development and future of Ramanagara, Channapatna, Magadi, Kanakapura and Harohalli taluks. Shivakumar said the people of Doddaballapura, Devanahalli, Hoskote, Kanakapura, Ramanagara, Channapatna and Magadi were all Bengalureans originally.
Shivakumar said, “Our objective is to extend the benefits of Bengaluru’s global reputation to Ramanagara, Magadi, Kanakapura, Channapatna, and Harohalli taluks, which are in close proximity to Bengaluru city. We propose renaming Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South district and making Ramanagara city the headquarters of the new district.”
He also said Ramanagara needs to be renamed, keeping Ramanagara (taluk) as the district headquarters. "We have submitted a proposal regarding this," he added.
Shivakumar said renaming would help bring industries to the district and the land valuation would go up as well.
"Bengaluru has scope to grow only towards Ramanagara and Tumkur as it has Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on other sides'' he said.
“We all belong to the Bengaluru Urban district. For administrative purposes, Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban, and Ramanagara districts were carved out. Today, the whole world is looking at Bengaluru, and we want to benefit from it. On one side, after Bengaluru, the state borders Andhra Pradesh. On the other side is Tamil Nadu. Hence, we are trying to save our identity and direct growth towards this region,” he said

What's The Political Significance?

The idea of renaming the district was initially floated by Shivakumar in October 2023. Back then, it has faced opposition, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal (Secular) attributing the proposal to real estate motivations.
The proposal has gained significance more so as it comes ahead of the Channapatna assembly bypoll, which is a significant battleground for Shivakumar after setbacks in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
Notably, Ramanagara district was carved out of the Bengaluru Rural district in 2007 when HD Kumaraswamy was Chief Minister. It is likely to trigger much heat as HD Kumaraswamy's election to the Lok Sabha necessitated the byelection in Channapatna.
Since the Lok Sabha election results, Shivakumar visited Channapatna assembly segment multiple times, aiming to reclaim the seat for the Congress and strengthen his influence in this Vokkaliga-dominated region.

'Insulting Lord Rama'

On July 10, Kumaraswamy said that he would reverse the plan, if implemented, if he comes back as the Chief Minister of the state. He said the primary motive behind the proposal was to exploit real estate opportunities that would arise from the move.
“I am confident of the JD(S) returning to power and I will become the CM again. Once that happens, I will ensure that the district reclaims its original name: Ramanagara,” Kumaraswamy told reporters.
He further said that renaming Ramanagara to ‘Bengaluru South’ would amount to an insult to Lord Rama.
“The name ‘Ramanagara’ has historical significance. The deputy CM must explain how changing the district’s name will benefit its residents. Instead of changing its name, the government should focus on developing the district,” said Kumaraswamy.
He said the district of Ramanagara was carved out when he was the CM to develop the entire region. Kumaraswamy said, “Renaming it will inconvenience both the public and the officials.”
Training his guns at Shivakumar and his brother, former MP D K Suresh, the union minister said, “The so-called leaders of the district must focus on developing it, and not on real estate business.”

Political Slugfest

Former MP DK Suresh slammed Shivakumar and his brother saying, “The so-called leaders of the district must focus on developing it, and not on real estate business.”
Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka lashed out at Congress and asked the government to clarify on the intention behind renaming Ramanagara.
“Is it because there is Rama in Ramanagara or is it to become rich through real estate?,” Ashoka said.
Pointing at Shivakumar, Ashoka said the government has already deceived the people of Bengaluru with the promise of creating ‘Brand Bengaluru’.
“Now, will development take place just by changing the name?”
The Ramanagara district was created when the BJP-JD(S) coalition was in power, Ashoka pointed out.
“Now, are you trying to avenge the defeat of your brother (DK Suresh) by renaming the district? Or, do you plan on starting a real estate business after grabbing land in Mysuru?"
Ashoka also asked Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to clarify if Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had ordered the name change.
