An old video of BharatPe co-founder Ashneer Grover explaining why he quit EY on his very first day is going viral following the death of EY Pune employee Anna Sebastian Perayil. In the video, Grover can be seen discussing toxic work cultures and says that he left EY on his very first day at the company, despite a Rs 1 crore package.
"I walked into the office, looked around, and pretended to have chest pain to get out," Ashneer Grover said. He described the office atmosphere as lifeless, referring to the employees as "mare huwe" and "laash".
Grover, however, also went on to state a controversial opinion saying, "If anyone is saying an office has a toxic culture, then that one is the best."
The video was shared by industrialist Harsh Goenka, who criticised Grover for promoting a "toxic work environment." "It's baffling to see anyone advocate for a toxic environment," Goenka wrote on X, adding the hashtag #AnnaPerayil.
Anna Sebastian, a 26-year-old chartered accountant, died in July due to extreme work pressures at EY's Pune office, her mother wrote in a letter to EY Chairman Rajiv Memani. Anna had joined the company just four months prior.
In the letter, Anna's mother accused the company of neglecting employee well-being, apart from saying that no one from EY attended Anna's funeral. "I hope my letter will bring real change so that no other family has to suffer what we have," she wrote.
In response, EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani addressed Anna's death and vowed to improve the workplace environment. "I am absolutely committed to nurturing a harmonious workplace, and I will not rest until that objective is accomplished," he wrote on LinkedIn. He also expressed regret that no one from EY attended the funeral, calling it "completely alien to our culture."
