Samir Modi Seeks Police Protection Amid Escalating Family Inheritance Dispute - Details

The core of the dispute lies in the execution of a trust deed by KK Modi, which, according to Samir Modi, stipulates that the siblings are equal beneficiaries and successors to the family’s companies and assets. Samir Modi has accused his mother of not adhering to the trust deed’s terms, alleging she has taken unilateral control of the company.

Samir Modi, executive director of Godfrey Phillips, has sought protection from Delhi Police amid escalating tensions within the Modi family over the distribution of a substantial inheritance. The dispute has intensified following the death of the family patriarch, KK Modi, six years ago.
In his plea to law enforcement, Samir Modi alleged that he felt threatened by his mother, Bina Modi, and her associates. "I am feeling very threatened as these people have assaulted me without any provocation and may again harm me physically or get me killed through their goons," Modi stated in his letter to the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Sarita Vihar police station.
According to The Economic Times report, earlier, Samir Modi lodged a complaint with Delhi Police, accusing his mother, her personal security officer, and Godfrey Phillips directors of causing him "grievous hurt." The tensions have now led him to seek further protection, citing orchestrated threats and physical violence from his mother and Lalit Bhasin, both board members of Godfrey Phillips.
"Despite the registration of a criminal case, they are still threatening me by sending messages through common known persons. I have also come to know that they are planning to not allow me to enter my office in Jasola. They may again assault me if I do not accept their illegal demands," Modi expressed in his letter.
The report added that the Bina Modi, also a director at the cigarette maker Godfrey Phillips, is at the centre of the inheritance dispute, which involves a Rs 11,000-crore estate. Samir Modi, along with his siblings Lalit Modi and Charu Modi, is contesting the distribution of the inheritance, which includes the family’s nearly 50% shareholding in the publicly listed Godfrey Phillips, valued at over Rs 5,500 crore, as well as shares in other Modi group firms across cosmetics, retail, and direct selling sectors.
Samir Modi, who also heads consumer businesses such as Colorbar Cosmetics, 24/7 Retail, and Modicare, has taken the matter to the Supreme Court, challenging his mother's handling of the family's affairs. The legal battle continues to unfold as the Modi family grapples with the complex dynamics of their substantial inheritance.
