The government's initiative, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, aimed at facilitating the transition of 10 million households to solar energy, is poised to not only revolutionize energy consumption but also generate employment opportunities. A workforce of 100,000 individuals is being readied for training in the installation and maintenance of solar panels, in collaboration between the ministries of renewable energy and skill development and entrepreneurship.
Launched earlier this year, the scheme offers subsidies of up to Rs 78,000 to households keen on installing solar power generating units, with the objective of enabling them to generate 300 units of electricity through grid-connected solar panels. According to The Times of India report, this substantial investment, with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, underscores the government's commitment to promoting renewable energy sources and reducing dependency on conventional power grids.
In addition to training skilled personnel, the scheme aims to address the need for vendors by preparing 50,000 individuals in entrepreneurship. REC Ltd, serving as the nodal agency for the rooftop solar programme, is expected to collaborate with institutions such as the National Power Training Institute and the National Skill Development Corporation for training purposes.
The report added that the success of such a large-scale initiative hinges not only on skilled manpower but also on streamlined processes and infrastructure. The renewable energy ministry's transition to a new portal and the impending national vendor registration process are indicative of efforts to facilitate smoother implementation.
Despite its nascent stage, the scheme has garnered significant interest, with registrations exceeding 10 million within a month of its launch. Nearly 800,000 applicants have expressed interest in installations, highlighting the enthusiasm and potential impact of the initiative.
