Ahmedabad: Nearly 70 individuals, including daily wage workers, office employees, and a physiotherapist, were apprehended on Tuesday as they were crossing the railway tracks. All of them were held by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) near the Chandlodia railway station. Upon investigation, the officials found out that the locals were using the railway tracks to avoid a flooded underpass at the Chandlodia Crossing. Due to unexpected rains on Monday, the underpass submerged in water, exposing the negligence of civic authorities.
It was learnt that the RPF officials were present at the railway tracks from Tuesday morning, and were detaining those who were using the railway tracks. The officials reportedly did not budge, and continued the drive even after the passers-by pleaded that they were forced to cross the tracks as it was difficult to cross the waterlogged underpass, said a media report.
A video also surfaced on social media platforms which showed a man requesting the police official to let him go. The man was crying when he tried to make a point that the designated route through the underpass was impassable. Therefore, he had to cross the railway tracks. One of the men who was caught by the police for crossing the railway tracks said, “As a pedestrian, I could not walk through the waterlogged underpass. So, I was passing through the crossing. A few cops were standing on the opposite side of the track who caught me,” quoted by Times of India.
All the detainees were taken to the Sabarmati railway station, where a makeshift court was arranged, the man said. He added that the police took money from those who were held, but did not give them any receipt.
“The police officials took around Rs 100 to Rs 200 from all the detained individuals. However, they did not give any receipt. Later, they took an undertaking from all the detainees, in which the latter confessed the crime before a magistrate. After that, they allowed us to go after around four hours,” alleged the man.
Meanwhile, all the detainees were instructed not to discuss the case with the media, added the report. RPF officials have not commented on the issue so far.
