Ghaziabad: A transgender person was allegedly thrashed and her clothes were torn off by a group of Kanwariyas in Ghaziabad, who suspected she was a thief. As per police reports, the incident took place in the Sihani Gate Police Station area on Monday. Ravendra Gautam, Station House Officer of Sihani Gate, said that they rescued the victim from the agitated crowd and brought her safely to the police.
"She was not a thief. It was because of some confusion and misunderstanding," Gautam said, as quoted by an Indian Express report.
Ravi Kumar Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), said that the devotees were moving on the road around 11:30 pm and dancing to music being played by a DJ. He added that two transgender people were also dancing at a distance. Trouble began when the two mingled with the crowd, a TOI report said.
"They started dancing with the Kanwariyas. They asked for money, but one of the pilgrims accused them of a theft attempt and started shouting. Others in the crowd surrounded the two and rained blows and kicks on them. A few even attacked them with hockey sticks," said the ACP, quoted the report.
According to Singh, a heated argument escalated between the cops and the pilgrims when the police arrived at the spot. They tried to resolve the matter through talks but some of the pilgrims became aggressive. However, no police complaint was filed by the two transgender people.
This comes after several Kanwariyas recently vandalized and overturned a government vehicle in Ghaziabad. The vehicle, with "police" written on it, entered a lane reserved for Kanwariyas and allegedly hit one of the pilgrims. Later, an angry mob began hitting the car with sticks, broke the doors, glass and also overturned the four-wheeler.
