Gurugram: The Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) is set to enhance the metro network in Gurgaon with the introduction of a new 36-kilometre elevated line connecting Sector 56 to Panchgaon. This proposed line will feature 28 stations and provide an interchange facility with the existing Rapid Metro at Sector 56.
The decision to pursue the new metro corridor was made during a recent HMRTC board meeting chaired by Chief Secretary TVSN Prasad. The project is currently in its early stages, with HMRTC’s consultant, RITES, working on the Detailed Project Report (DPR). Scheduled for completion by the end of August 2024, the DPR will provide a comprehensive analysis of passenger projections, taking into account factors such as population density, employment centres, and traffic patterns.
Expansion Plans Beyond Sector 56-Panchgaon Line
HMRTC’s ambitions extend beyond the Sector 56-Panchgaon corridor. The corporation is also in the early planning stages for another metro line linking Gurgaon to Faridabad. Additionally, a third metro line connecting Millennium City Centre to AIIMS-Jhajjar and further to Badsa is under consideration, as per a Times Property report. These expansions aim to enhance connectivity within Gurgaon and neighbouring cities, alleviate traffic congestion, and offer a sustainable transportation alternative for residents and commuters.Rapid Metro sees an increase in ridership
In the meantime, the existing Rapid Metro has experienced a significant increase in ridership. HMRTC data shows that passenger numbers rose from 12.2 lakh in April to 13.8 lakh in May 2024, highlighting the growing dependence on metro services for daily commuting in Gurgaon.
As the DPR for the new metro line nears completion, further details regarding the project's estimated cost, timeline, and alignment will be made available.
With these planned metro expansions, Gurgaon is set to become a major metro hub, providing residents and commuters with convenient and efficient transportation options.
