Noida: A daily wage worker was trapped in the lift of Tower 26 at La Residentia Society in Greater Noida West for about half an hour on Thursday night. The man was rescued after a resident of the tower alerted the maintenance team. Around 9 p.m. on Thursday, Renu Singh, a resident of the ninth floor, was descending the stairs because the lift was not working when she heard a commotion on the fifth floor.
"There were some residents and security guards trying to open the lift doors. I called the maintenance team," Singh said. (sic.), as quoted by The Times of India.
The identity of the man remains unknown. Further details are awaited.
In another recent incident, three people were injured when a lift's brakes failed, causing it to crash through the roof of an apartment building in Noida, police said. The incident happened at Paras Tierra Society in Sector 137. After some residents exited the lift on the fourth floor of Tower 5, the lift's brakes suddenly failed. It ascended rapidly to the 25th floor before smashing the roof of the building. Two women and a man inside the lift sustained injuries.
In other news, a 73-year-old woman died of suspected cardiac arrest after the cable of a lift at Paras Tierra Society snapped, leading to a free fall between floors. The lift did not hit the ground but was caught between some of the middle floors of the building.
As per an India Today report, in February this year, the Uttar Pradesh government passed the Lift and Escalator Bill, 2024, aimed at controlling the rising accidents due to lifts and escalators in urban areas of Uttar Pradesh. The bill encompasses provisions covering registration, maintenance, prompt notification to relevant authorities in case of lift crashes, and compensation and insurance for individuals affected by accidents.
