Who Is Chitra Sarwara?
Chitra Sarwara's political lineage was initially rooted in the Congress Party, however, she was being denied the party's ticket for the 2024 elections in favour of Parvinder Pal Pari. Congress then suspended her for six years for ‘anti-party’ activities.
Earlier, Sarwara was with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and served as its Haryana unit vice president. However, in December 2023, Chitra and her father Nirmal Singh joined the Congress. Sarwara's political career began in 2013 when she was elected as independent corporator from Ambala Cantt.
Notably, defying all exit polls which projected Congress' thumping majority in Haryana assembly polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) look all set for a third term. Amid this, senior party leader and 6-time MLA Anil Vij said that he will become the CM of the state if high command instructs. Vij claimed that many in the Congress party want Bhupinder Singh Hooda to lose.
"BJP is leading in the elections and they (Congress) are celebrating because many people in the Congress party want Bhupinder Singh Hooda to lose the elections...I will accept the mandate of the public. If the high command wants, I will be the Chief Minister," Vij told ANI. Anil Vij, BJP's candidate from Ambala Cantt, had earlier staked claim for the Chief Minister's post if party wins a third term in the state.
