Bhubaneswar: Mohan Charan Majhi took oath as the Chief Minister of Odisha on Wednesday after much suspense over the name of the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) CM in the state. Along with him, Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida took oath as his deputies.
The swearing-in ceremony was also attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was earlier seen at the oath-taking ceremony of Chandrababu Naidu as he commenced his fourth term as Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister.
Earlier in the day, Mohan Charan Majhi met Odisha Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) supremo Naveen Patnaik in Bhubaneswar and invited him to the swearing-in ceremony. Speaking to reporters, Majhi said that Patnaik assured him he would attend the ceremony.
Notably, Naveen Patnaik reigned Odisha for 24 years as the Chief Minister before the BJP dealt a crushing blow to his BJD party in the state election, winning 78 seats in the 147-member Assembly. The BJD could only manage 51 seats.

In a post on the microblogging site X, Rajnath Singh had announced, "Delighted to announce that Shri Mohan Charan Majhi has been elected unanimously as the leader of Odisha BJP Legislature Party. He is a young and dynamic party karyakarta who will take the state forward on road to progress and prosperity as the new Chief Minister of Odisha. Many congratulations to him."
"Also, it has been decided that two Deputy Chief Ministers will be designated to head the new State Government. Shri KV Singh Deo and Smt. Pravati Parida will serve the state as Deputy Chief Minister. Congratulations to them!" Singh added in his post.
Addressing the media after his selection as Chief Minister, Mohan Majhi said, "The government of the past 24 years has been changed. We will try to fulfil the belief that the people have shown in the BJP for the fulfilment of their dreams and for the development of Odisha. I promise to make Odisha the number one state in the country."

BJP's First CM In Odisha

The 52-year-old was the youngest among the frontrunners for the chief minister post. He won the Keonjhar seat this year with a margin of 11,577 votes.
The four-time MLA has a deep understanding of Odisha’s governance system and has a thorough understanding of the state's governance system and has played a key role in shaping the BJP's policies for the region.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Odisha, the BJP won 20 out of 21 seats, while the Congress secured only one seat. On the other hand, the Congress won 14 out of 147 seats, whereas the BJP secured victory in 78 seats in the Assembly elections.
The BJD and the BJP were in alliance for 11 years between 1998 and 2009 and fought three Lok Sabha and two Assembly elections together.
Naveen Patnaik severed ties with the saffron party ahead of the 2009 general elections, months after a riot in Kandhamal the previous year.
