Karan Johar Seeks Legal Action Against Film 'Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar' For Unauthorized Use Of His Name

Karan Johar has taken legal action against the producers of the film Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar. On Wednesday, Johar filed a plea in the Bombay High Court, asking for an immediate stop to the film’s release, which is planned for June 14, 2024. The case is set to be heard by Justice RI Chagla on Thursday.
The filmmaker has sought a permanent ban and an injunction to prevent the makers from using his name in the movie's title. He stressed that he has no connection with the film or its producers, who he claims are using his name without his permission.
Johar argued that the film’s title clearly references his name, which violates his personal rights and right to publicity. He believes the makers are taking advantage of his well-known name and reputation without his consent.
The lawsuit also pointed out that the film's title, trailers, and posters are already being shown publicly and shared on social media. Johar stated that these promotional activities are causing ongoing damage to his reputation and goodwill.
"These trailers and posters have caused and are continuing to cause irreparable loss and damage to the goodwill and reputation of Johar. Further, such a release of the film with the title containing his brand name 'Karan Johar,' together or in parts, will cause irreparable loss and damage to the goodwill and reputation which he has gained after investing huge amounts of time, effort, and money," the suit stated.
The My Name Is Khan director further argued that if the film is released with his name in the title, it would cause irreparable harm to his well-earned reputation. Johar highlighted that his reputation has been built through significant investment of time, effort, and money, which is now being misused without authorisation.
