Maidaan Director On The Film Being Different From Shah Rukh Khan's Chak De India: Struggle Is Different

Ajay Devgn is all set to get on the field and is ready for the release of Maidaan, Boney Kapoor's sports drama which will hit the theatres on April 10. The movie's trailer was out recently and people were quick to compare it with Shah Rukh Khan's Chak De! India which was also a sports drama. However, Maidaan's director recently spoke up about this comparison and said that there were no similarities between the two movies and asserted that the two projects are not similar.

Maidaan Director On Similaties With Chak De! India

In a conversation with India Today, Amit Sharma clarified that there are no similarities between the two movies and expressed, "As soon as a sports film arrives, people compare these films because of the story of a coach and players. Even before watching the film, people assume that it's a similar film. There are no similarities between these films, except maybe 22 players are running after one ball on the field. The story is different, the struggle is different. This is also not a sports biopic, it's the journey of Abdul Rahim. Maidaan is about his emotional journey. Football is just the medium."

Amit Sharma On Challenges Faced While Doing Maidaan

Amit Sharma also revealed that he wanted to do a biopic and sports drama since very long and got to do both though it was a challenging process. He said, "Challenges are always good, as one would get bored making the same films. The most important thing is that audiences will finally get to know about this man. They need to know what he's done for the country. There is no jingoism, but just his utmost love for India and football. Also, I always wanted to do a biopic and a sports film. This gave me the opportunity to do both, and that was a treat."

Amit Sharma On Football As A Game

The Maidaan director thinks that Football is yet to recieve as much as love as Cricket receives in India. He added, "The change is happening at the grassroot level. Also, we are a cricket-loving nation, so the focus is there more. I think after this film, the change might happen. We were never a bad team. We were called the 'Brazil of Asia' by the FIFA chief once. We are such a huge population that we can always find 11 players who can represent us. I think once we start getting more medals, youngsters will get more interested. Cricket also became big in the country only after the 1983 World Cup."

About Maidaan

Apart from Ajay Devgn, Priyamani and Gajraj Rao also star in Maidaan. The Amit Sharma directorial revolves around football coach Syed Abdul Rahim's efforts to establish and develop a team comprised of young players from underprivileged backgrounds in order to take Indian football on a worldwide scale. He had guided his team to Asian Games victories in 1951 and 1962 with the help of players like Chunni Goswami, PK Banerjee, Balaram, Franco and Arun Ghosh.
