The Genesis of Mr. and Mrs. Mahi

In an exclusive interview with Zoom, Mehrotra shared the origins of the film. "The idea of Mr. and Mrs. Mahi actually happened in two parts. Initially, it was just a rough idea about a couple sharing a bond through cricket," he explained. "But it lacked the depth needed for a full narrative. Then, the concept of a never-ending need for validation emerged, and that’s when it all began,” he went on to add.

Exploring Relatable Themes

The writer went on to speak on the importance of contemporary and relatable themes in storytelling. According to Mehrotra, "We often get caught in the race for fame and external validation, forgetting the joy that initially drove us. This thought fit well into the narrative of Mr. and Mrs. Mahi. He even went on to praise the lead pair Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor, for their performances.
"They are perfect, especially given the performances they've delivered. We couldn’t have asked for anything better," he stated.

A Rich Journey from Script to Screen

Discussing the journey from writing to the final film, Mehrotra described it as "very rich" with numerous learnings about narrative, performances, and character development. "Our characters are very close to real, with genuine insecurities, fears, ambitions, and complexities. Writing for such characters was a tightrope walk, making the experience enriching."

The Filmmaking Experience

The filmmaking process was both challenging and enjoyable for Mehrotra and the team. "Every film has its struggles, and we had ours. But we all believed in the story and enjoyed the process, from shooting to editing. It was a very enriching journey for me."
According to Mehrotra, slice-of-life stories are reconnecting with audiences, as evidenced by the success of Mr. and Mrs. Mahi. "I feel that slice-of-life stories are beginning to reconnect with the audience, and I'm happy about it,” he opined.
According to Mehrotra, the film's biggest unique selling point is its heart. "This film has a lot of heart, making it very relatable and real. That reflects in our story, writing, performances, and direction."

Final Reflections

Mehrotra's final reaction to the film was a mix of emotions. "Before the final screening, there's always some nervousness about whether the film has landed as intended. But I was quite satisfied and happy with the outcome. The overwhelming reactions from the audience confirmed that we achieved what we set out to do," he signed off.
