"Inka akele ka ek hi photo tha, vo ration card mein lag gaya. Dekhne ka mann karta tha, toh kya karte, khud hi bana liye." It is with utmost innocence that Poonam, played by debutante Rachna Gupta, lets out these lines in Laapataa Ladies. Your heart instantly goes out to this woman who has been living without her husband, looking after the entire household and raising their 6-year-old son alone. Yet, she has no complaints.
With limited screen time and only a handful dialogues, Rachna managed to leave a mark. So much so that her character stays with you long after you have watched the film. While Phool and Jaya get their happy endings, one is left wondering what happens with Poonam. Does she gather the courage to pursue sketching? Or does she fight to go live with her husband?
As Rachna joined us for an exclusive conversation, we quizzed her about what she thinks happens with her character after the movie ends. Having lived the part, Rachna shared that Poonam is the type of woman who wouldn't let go of her responsibilities and would shift her entire focus to her son.
She told us, "I feel that she (Poonam) wouldn't have been dependent on her husband anymore. Instead, she would have put her entire focus on making his son the kind of person who would go out to study, like Jaya, and realise his calibre."
"She has always had a strong sense of responsibility and since there are all elder members in the family, she wouldn't leave them. At the same time, she wouldn't make any sacrifices as well. She would just fulfil her responsibility as a mother in a much better way," Rachna added.
Playing such a challenging and unconventional character in their very first film, too with such nuances, is not something many can pull off. Sharing her experience of portraying a woman leading a life completely opposite to hers, Rachna said, "I realised my range as an actor after playing this character. Honestly speaking, when I would shoot for my scenes, it used to feel like someone has tied me up. I would do stretching to release the feeling of burden."
"I also realised that sometimes we fear that we would get confined to certain types of roles. I also started thinking that I wouldn't be able to play such a character since I do not look like her, I haven't been in the surroundings where she lives. I literally pushed my limitations to play this character. And that's the challenge of being an actor."
With Laapataa Ladies continuing to rule the OTT space, the character of Poonam, and the way Rachna has played it, deserves as much attention and recognition as Phool and Jaya.
