Expendables 4 Opens To Disappointing Box Office Figures, Bested By The Nun II

In what is being touted as the worst weekend for theatrical ticket sales this year, Expendables 4 had a lackluster opening, grossing just $8.3 million in its debut weekend. This marks the weakest start for a film in the action-packed franchise led by Jason Statham. Surprisingly, it was narrowly surpassed by The Nun II, which continued its September box office dominance.

As per a report in The Hollywood Reporter, Expendables 4, produced by Lionsgate and Millennium and financed by Millennium, hit 3,400 theaters and was initially estimated to earn around $15 million during its opening weekend. However, the film fell short of expectations.
This installment in the franchise arrives almost a decade after its predecessor, The Expendables 3, which garnered $15.8 million during its opening weekend in 2014 and eventually accumulated $214 million in global box office earnings. The series started with a bang in 2010, grossing $35 million in its opening, followed by $28 million for the third entry in 2014. Collectively, the first three films in the franchise raked in an impressive $800 million worldwide.
The film reunites Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham alongside Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture. The storyline revolves around the Expendables, a team called upon when all other options fail. The addition of new team members with fresh styles and tactics promises to inject "new blood" into the squad. Megan Fox, 50 Cent, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Jacob Scipio, and Levy Tran join the franchise, alongside Andy Garcia.

Box Office Holdover: The Nun II

Despite Expendables 4's lukewarm performance, The Nun II maintained its grip on the box office in its third weekend, adding an estimated $8.4 million to its domestic earnings, bringing the total to nearly $70 million. Globally, the film is set to cross the $200 million mark, with an international gross of $20.8 million.
