Am I Ok?: Tig Notaro, Stephanie Allynne Film Is Just Okay, Despite Dakota Johnson

Co-directors Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne’s 2022 film Am I Ok? is a redemptive step for the dishi Dakota Johnson. Admittedly, it would be a long while before we forgive her for Madame Web. But Am I Ok? is a step in the right direction, albeit a baby step.
There is nothing here that would be considered even borderline revolutionary or life-changing. A 32-year-old whiny fussy woman Lucy (Dakota Johnson) suddenly wakes up to her sexual orientation, or as her best friend puts it, Lucy finds out that she like vaginas. This one-liner is stretched by screenwriter Lauren Pomerantz to a feature-length with little inner conviction or strength.
The movie plays out like a bunch of sketchy episodes. In fact, we feel it would have worked better as a miniseries of, say, four-five episodes (max) each with a title like, ‘Lucy Discovers The Joys Of The Vagina’, ‘Lucy Goes Out On Date With A Work Mate’, ‘Lucy Finally Tells Her Boyfriend To F..k Off(in a manner of speaking)’, etc etc.
There is an underlying mood of sketchiness about Lucy’s voyage into self-discovery, if ‘voyage’ is the right word, ‘hopping ride’ is more like it. The film seems fixated on nothing much. It skims over everything that it deals with, including Lucy’s sexuality which she discusses with her best friend Jane(Sonoya Mizuno) as if mulling over an interesting titbit on the internet.
There is a looming lack of gravity in the film as if we are being asked to deal with Lucy and her problems as a rom-com and nothing more, thank you.
A bigger problem than Lucy’s newly-discovered love for the vagina is her best friend’s decision to move from LA to London. Considering how emotionally dependent Lucy is on Jane it is baffling how she makes such a decision without taking Lucy into confidence.
Lucy responds to her BF’s announcement with predictable tears and sobs.
At the press of a button, the film gives us borderline hysterical characters. The weirdest of all is the guy who plays Jane’s boss, informing her of her promotion to London with shovels of poor pranks and winking jokes.
Which boss in today’s day and age would risk fooling around with a female worker? In the whimsical world created in Am I Ok? the characters are allowed to be high-strung without the danger of after-effects. To an extent, the actors save the day, especially the pretty Kiersey Clemons as Lucy’s luscious office colleague who comes home with Lucy, cooks and sleeps with her and then decides that vaginas are not her scene.
She seems to be the only character who knows her mind in this amiable but aimless film about searching for the centre of one’s universe in a haze of hyphenated misadventures.
