Damaged Is More A Sick Than Slick Senseless Serialkiller Thriller

Actor Samuel L Jackson can be really funny at times. This is not one of those occasions. Director Terry McDonough’s serial killer thriller Damaged has too much blood splashing and too many severed limbs flashing all over the place.

Damaged Falls Short

The killer’s identity jumps at us at the end in a fancily shot low-rent hotel without any warning: we are expected to applaud the sheer unexpectedness of the grand revelation. But by simply playing ini-mini-miny-moe with the suspects and nailing the gruesome crimes on the least unlikely suspect(is that a spoiler?) we aren’t getting anywhere with this pale self-important police procedural.
Jackson as Dan Lawson is in fine fettle. But the script , like that journalist who once mistook him for Laurence Fishburne, the skimpy screenplay keeps prodding and provoking him to bring out the bitter version of himself on screen. Lawson’s lush investigator is nothing we haven’t seen before.
Set in picturesque Edinburgh there were many occasions in the lazy narration where I was tempted to push the characters out of the way for a better view of the lush landscape. Scotland is the real hero in this one. Sorry, Jackson.
Jackson is partnered with another fine actor Vincent Cassel. They play veterans in the homicidal hemisphere reuniting for a cause. These are the kind of hardened crime investigators who won’t get squeamish about gory crimes, even if we the audience, tend to recoil at the overdone occultist violence evidenced in the scenes of crime.
By far, the most interesting character is Glen Boyd(Gianni Capaldi) who plays a grieving father. He has lost his little son and is now deeply estranged from his wife Marie (Laura Haddock)like the wife in the recent far superior bereavement thriller Silent Night. Marie hasn’t left Glen, though.
The most illuminated part of this murky thriller is the strained relationship between the grieving parents When Marie is murdered, Glen Boyd is shattered beyond belief. Why was the only compassionate character in the entire godforsaken universe of this wretched plot, bumped off, if not to create more vicious mayhem in a screenplay already loaded with meanness?
Before this unforgivable twist of the knife(Marie’s grisly murder), Dan Lawson is heard casually probing into Glen’s grief in a clumsily written car conversation. Weirdly enough the very privately bereaved opens up to Dan whom he has barely come to know. It is out of character. But perfectly in-character with the unhinged screenplay.

Damaged Fails to Impress

Damaged(the title is the truest part of this duplicitous film) is riddled with weak plot links, and characters who give away more of themselves than they are meant to. As is the Won't, the serial killer thriller has plenty of night shots . They do not have the desired effect of creating mystery.
The absence of light is merely indicative of the clueless meandering position that this film assumes .
