The tragedy and end of a sporting dream
But, as they say, fate has its way. Laurie was meant for acting, which he discovered by joining the Footlights drama club in England. Founded in 1883, Footlights is one of Britain's oldest student sketch comedy troupes that is run by the students of Cambridge. It was at Footlights that he got introduced to Stephen Fry. Their friendship and partnership began at Selwyn College, and they eventually started writing for Footlights together.
