The Kannada film industry has long been fascinated with ghost stories and superstitions and now director Vyaana Varna Jammula has added his own twist to the genre.
His latest film, Maantrika marks his debut in exploring the supernatural. Vyaana Varna Jammula has not only directed the film but has also written the story and screenplay while taking on a key role in the movie. The film’s teaser was recently unveiled.
Fear and superstitions
About Maantrika, Vyaana Varna Jammula revealed that the story revolves around fear and how it intersects with superstitions.
"Everyone experiences fear at some point. We live in fear for 1,440 minutes each day but what happens when those fears are connected to superstitions? That is what we explore in this film. Is there truly a ghost or is it just an imagined fear imposed on children? Maantrika tries to strip away those fears and bring people to reality," he said.
Ghost hunter
The film’s plot centers on a ghost hunter from an organisation called 'Come to Reality'. The story follows his encounters with supernatural events and how he navigates these challenges.
Vyaana Varna Jammula hinted that Maantrika is not just a standalone film but could be the first in a series with more instalments to follow.
The film was shot in a now-demolished mall near Hoskote, adding a layer of authenticity to the eerie storyline. The cast and crew reportedly experienced strange occurrences during the shoot, enhancing the film's haunted atmosphere.
"The story is the true hero of this film. It’s made for the big screen, and we encourage audiences to experience it in theatres," said Vyaana Varna Jammula. The film has already passed censorship and is slated for release soon.
