Rahul Sadasivan may be only three films old, but the director has already cemented a position for himself in Malayalam cinema. The director has been winning accolades for the manner in which his recent film Bramayugam has been made.
Set in the pre-independence era, the black-and-white film has Malayalam superstar Mammootty playing the lead in a horror story that sends chills down your spine.
Bramayugam is an unusual attempt in Indian cinema, and the experiment seems to have paid off handsomely, with the film setting cash registers ringing at the box office.
In an exclusive chat with Zoom, Rahul Sadasivan talks about his fascination for directing horror films, working with superstar Mammootty and more.

Rahul Sadasivan wanted Mammootty for the lead role:

Rahul, is an ardent fan of Mammootty, so much so that he designed the film's character, Kodumon Potti exclusively for Mammootty. Ask him if the actor was convinced after listening to the film's narration from the word go and he says, "Mammootty sir was very excited after he heard the script. After that, we developed the character a bit more. He didn't have any inhibitions when he knew that he plays a menacing role in the film."
"After Mammootty sir watched the film, he said he really liked it and appreciated the whole team. I am very fortunate and blessed to work with a legend like Mammootty sir," he adds.
Will Bramayugam have a sequel? Says Rahul, "I haven't really thought about it, but the possibilities are endless."
Rahul Sadasivan's strength in storytelling is his preparedness. He says that he never shoots without developing a storyboard and this is a key aspect which he has used right from his first film.

Rahul Sadasivan on his fascination for the unknown:

Rahul Sadasivan's first film Red Rain, explored the concept of aliens, while his second film Bhoothakaalam was a horror film.
With Bramayugam, Rahul has once again tapped into the horror territory.
Ask him about his fascination to tell stories about the unknown and he replies, "This genre fascinates me. I feel a lot can be told in such stories. There is so much scope."
Growing up Rahul says he liked films by Alfred Hitchcock
and novels by Stephen King. Ask him if he has had a scary supernatural experience and he gently laughs, dismissing any such encounter.
Given that the director has already worked with the legendary Mammootty, it is only fair to ask him which superstar he intends to work with in his next film.
Rahul says, "See, this is based on my script. For me, the script takes the lead first. At the moment, I just have an idea for my next."
