Malayalam Industry Gears Up To Re-release Remastered Superhit Films In Theatres

Following the trend set by the Tamil film industry, which has been re-releasing classic and superhit films to increase footfalls in theatres, the Malayalam industry too is now all set to have a series of remastered classic and superhit films hitting the screens a second time. Many yesteryear superhits, mostly featuring the two superstars of Malayalam cinema Mammootty and Mohanlal, are set to be re-released, giving new fans a chance to experience these films on the big screen. Malayalam Industry Gears Up To Re-release Remastered Superhit Films In Theatres
Looking to take a leaf out of the Tamil film industry’s book, the Malayalam film industry is now all set to re-release the remastered versions of yesteryear Malayalam superhits in theatres.
It may be recalled that the Tamil theatre owners chose to re-release remastered yesteryear superhits in order to increase footfalls after a series of new Tamil films failed to draw crowds to the theatres.
Now, several classic Malayalam films are scheduled to be remastered and re-released in theatres. This is following the successful release of the digitally remastered 4K Dolby Atmos version of Mohanlal's iconic action flick Spadikam that was re-released in theatres in 2023, and the recent re-release of Thalapathy Vijay’s cult hit Ghilli in theatres, which did exceptional business despite the fact that many highly successful new Malayalam releases were still playing in theatres. Perhaps, makers of these older films are looking to cash in on the trend, but the fans are not complaining one bit!

Many classic Malayalam films are expecting a re-release
An industry insider had put out a post on social media, sharing the news about the spate of re-releases that fans can expect, which was deleted soon enough, but not before triggering an excited response from fans. As per the post, many classics, mostly from the two Big Ms of Malayalam, such as Oru Vadakkan Veeragaadha, Devasuram, Aaram Thampuran, Devadoothan, Kaalapani, Vallyettan, 1921, Paleri Manikyam, and Kireedam are likely to be released.

A Long Line Of Re-releases

As far as confirmed news on these releases is concerned, SCube Films is bringing Mammootty’s classic period film Oru Vadakkan Veeragaadha directed by Hariharan, which was released 35 years ago in 1989, back to the big screen. The preliminary work for this re-release has been completed, according to the company. Another classic getting a re-release is Mohanlal’s 1993 cult hit Manichitrathazhu, directed by legendary director Fazil, which has completed the digital remastering process and is ready for re-release on July 12, and an official announcement is expected very soon. The film is being re-released in collaboration with director Fazil and producer Swargachitra Appachan. Meanwhile, another Mohanlal classic, Kireedam (1989) directed by Sibi Malayil, is also being considered for a release according to Kireedam Unni, one of the film’s producers. The film won Mohanlal his first National Award.
Director Sibi Malayil had also recently shared a post on social media showing him deep at work during the remastering process of his supernatural thriller Devadhoothan with Mohanlal, which became an audience favourite much later despite not doing so well during its initial run. The 4K editing and DI (Digital Intermediate) work has already been completed, according to producer Siyad Kokker who has also stated that the film will definitely hit theatres within the next few months. This goes to show that this re-release trend can also help many good films that didn’t do so well financially during its original release may have a chance to get due justice this time around.

A Chance For New Fans

D Soman Pillai, the owner of Kollam-based Matinee Now, has confirmed to the media that they are spearheading a series of re-releases, and preparations are currently underway for the re-release of other Mohanlal classics such as Kaalapani (Siraichaalai in Tamil), Devasuram, and Aaram Thampuran; as well as Mammooty films Valyettan and the period drama 1921. Some of these films did really well during their original run, but this will offer new fans a chance to enjoy these films on the big screen. Producer Maha Subair is planning to re-release the Mammootty-starrer Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha, which featured Mammootty in multiple roles and was released in 2008 to much critical acclaim, but did not fare too well at the box office.
