Varshangalkku Sesham Review An Endearing Yet Melodramatic Love Letter To Cinema
A Still From The Film

About Varshangalkku Sesham

It could be a novel twist of fate that nearly two decades after Mohanlal and Srinivasan gave us Udhayananu Tharam, a brilliant satire on Malayalam cinema, and the struggles of many aspiring filmmakers and actors, their progeny have come together for a film that takes the same background but delivers something completely different, a poetic love letter to everyone who has walked the streets of Kodambakkam dreaming to make it big in cinema someday.

Performances

The story is primarily narrated from the point of view of Vasu played by Dhyan Sreenivasan.
It can be confidently said that Dhyan Sreenivasan is best utilised when under the direction of his older brother.
Dhyan has delivered a nuanced performance for every part of his character's progress in life, starting from a young man full of dreams to a much older man who has seen much in life.
Pranav Mohanlal as Murali does have a very compelling screen presence, which feels let down in parts because of his deadpan dialogue delivery, but if you have observed his earlier films, you can see his growth as a performer.
There are certain nods to his superstar father, but those seem like conscious additions as some sort of fan service. Kalyani Priyadrashan too lags in this aspect as the audience may not be completely convinced by her character, but still manages to fit into the entire narrative purely on the strength of the way the character and the setting is written.
This film is filled with interesting cameos including Basil Joseph, Aju Varghese, Asif Ali, and Nivin Pauly, whose presence in the film will stick with you, especially Nivin's segment, which is an absolute joy to watch on screen.
Another performance to mention is music director Shaan Rahman who has made his acting debut in this film. Y Gee Mahendran as Swami is another memorable character.

Technical

It has come to a point where not many filmmakers can beat Vineeth Sreenivasan's writing and characterization when it comes to putting together a feel-good narrative such as this one. The screenplay draws you in, and holds your attention till the very end as we, as an audience, would be heavily invested in their outcomes.
The comedy takes on elements of dark humour, and does not feel forced. For long-time fans of Malayalam films, they will be able to spot a lot of film and pop culture references and nods.
There is a little stretching out of the conflict portions later in the film that can get a little melodramatic, but that is exactly the part of the film where the narrative properly takes off.
The cinematography by Vishwajith succeeds in delivering a distinct look and feel to the two different time periods shown in the film. Some frames are just pure art. Ranjan Abraham has paced the movie neatly, and considering how less distracting it was despite having a close to three-hour duration.
Music by Amrith Ramnath is the soul of the film, a perfect example of the synergy between the director of the film and the music director. In fact, the placement of the music is an integral part of the narrative itself, oftentimes being the soul of a scene.
Overall, Varshangalkku Sesham is a fantastic visual ode to cinema, and to Kodambakkam, an area that fostered thousands of dreams, and has many more such stories of love, friendship, success, and failure to narrate.
