About Bayamariya Brammai

Analysis

Director Rahul Kabali’s film, Bayamariya Brammai begins on a very promising note. It’s evident right at the start that this film will be distinctly different from the regular pattern of storytelling that one often witnesses in the Tamil cinema.
The story is about a writer whose writing is so impactful that it makes readers envision themselves as the characters of his books. It so happens that this writer chooses to make the life of a notorious murderer who has committed 96 murders as the subject of his next book. He meets the convict in prison to understand his mind and gets to realise that the murderer views his crimes as a work of art and likens them to a writer writing a book. What happens then is what the film is all about…
The manner in which the story is narrated is distinctly different from the usual method employed in Tamil cinema to narrate such stories.

What Works…

The film’s biggest strength is K’s music. The background score is so appropriate that it fills the several voids all through the film.
Guru Somasundaram, the class actor that he is, steals the thunder in the very short period that he comes on screen.

What doesn’t Work…

Unlike other films, one of the two lead characters in this film – Jagadish – is portrayed by not one but several actors. This can be quite confusing to most audiences who might not be used to seeing several actors play the same character in a film.
For instance, every time Jagadish begins to narrate about a murder he’s committed, the sequence pertaining to the actual murder has a different actor coming in as Jagadish. If it is Guru Somasundaram in one episode, it is Harish Uttaman in another.
The film is a slow burn drama that only has the deep, layered conversation between the writer and the murderer to offer for the most part. For those unable to appreciate the layered dialogues, this might come across as being just another boring conversation.
The film has some sequences where the murderer is shown making paintings and drawings using the blood of his victims. This might not go down well with audiences who are averse to seeing blood on screen.
Although the film ends with a message to the murderer that if he had paid adequate attention he would have been able to appreciate compassion and humanism and as a result, would have chosen to kill his ‘art’ rather than kill people, the overall impression that one gets is that the emphasis given to the murders is more and that the final message is not as emphatically put across as the idea of considering murder as an art.

Verdict

Bayamariya Brammai is a distinctly different film that leaves you exhausted by the time it ends.
