About Haraa

Analysis

Actor Mohan, who has delivered some of Tamil cinema’s iconic films including Mouna Raagam and Mella Thiranthathu Kathavu, returns to the big screen with this unfortunately insipid and uninspiring revenge drama. The film tries hard to come across as an intelligent, investigative thriller but only succeeds in showcasing itself as a long-drawn, uninspiring drama that takes its own sweet time to come to an end.
Right from the start, the film tries to create an air of mystery and suspense. We see Ibrahim (Mohan) performing Namaz and leaving his residence, only to realise moments later that he is actually a Hindu called Ram. His wife, Nila (Anumol), meanwhile keeps pretending that she is a widow. This is followed by a series of sequences, quite a few of which seem either inconsequential to the plot or downright silly or artificial. Several questions come to your mind within the first half an hour of the film itself and you begin to hope that the remaining part of the film has answers for the questions that have cropped up. While you do get answers to a couple of questions, several others don’t get answered at all.
Meanwhile, we are also schooled on how women are harassed by men and how shooting boys found misbehaving with college girls in buses can actually serve to be a deterrent and stop molestation and rape.
It takes a while for you to get a fair understanding of what is transpiring on screen. The film’s plot goes all over the place before it begins to make sense and by the time that happens, the film has reached the climax.
Mohan as Ram/Ibrahim looks to portray a determined dad and only partially succeeds in his attempt. Casting in the film is a problem with Mohan looking younger to actress Anumol. Full marks to Mohan though for having managed to stay in shape and for looking pretty much the same way he looked several decades ago.

Verdict

In all, Haraa is far from being an engrossing thriller. It is a taxing affair that is bound to leave you drained by the time it ends.
