Honeymoon Express Review: A Relationship Drama That’s Partially Engaging

Honeymoon Express Review A Relationship Drama Thats Partially Engaging
A Still From The Film

About Honeymoon Express

Analysis

Couples and newlyweds suffering from ‘compatibility issues’ has been quite a popular trope in Tollywood. Honeymoon Express too tries to show the misperceptions and indecisiveness that modern couples go through in a relationship. The director tries to narrate the rising yet familiar trend of young couples getting separated due to petty issues like egos and misunderstandings.
Director Bala Rajasekharuni tries to highlight the importance of self-respect and respecting each other's wishes in a relationship. He uses a ‘resort trip’ as a predominant means to bring about changes in their lives and how they reconcile. However, he does not manage to do this convincingly though. The concept of finding reconciliation at a resort is not worth pursuing either.
The proceedings towards the second half makes the film feel cheesy and a little boring. The fact that the lead characters may find happiness with people other than their spouses never feels fully explored - with the ending coming across as clichéd and routine.
The scenes that are written between the couple - Sonali and Ishaan - give us a clear picture about the trouble in paradise, and their minor disagreements leading to chaos. It establishes that modern-day relationships are not marred by ego. However, a needless science-fiction angle and time-travel elements are huge put offs. The second half delves into the hidden truths of their relationship – the couple gradually unravelling the issues they have been grappling with and eventually, the realisation.
Honeymoon Express is a typical relationship comedy-drama and its lead actors Chaitanya Rao and Hebbah Patel do well. While both excel together as a couple, inconsistent writing and a familiar plot makes the film unexciting. Kalyani Malik’s music and RP Patnaik’s background score are adequate.
The story has all the trappings of a typical love story and differences in a marriage. But beneath, director Bala addresses pertinent issues and draws winsome performances from Chaitanya and Heebah.

Verdict

Honeymoon Express gets its intended message. It has some engaging moments but is frivolous at the same time.
