About Mathu Vadalara 2

Those of you who have watched Mathu Vadalara (2019) know the equations between the two all-weather friends, Babu Mohan and Yesu Dasu. They started out as delivery boys, their greed got the better of them, and they fell into trouble.
In the sequel, the duo are bad cops themselves. As part of a High Emergency Team, they are tasked to resolve abductions in no time. Their Case No. 37 involves saving the daughter of a rich woman. Much to their shock, they figure out that they have been implicated by an unknown entity. Since they have been secret offenders in the department, they are left with little defences.

Analysis:

The film doesn't take much time to establish its characters. The backstory of Ajay's character plays out during the opening credits. The introduction of some characters (for example, that of Vennela Kishore) is smartly done. The 15-minute stretch leading to the interval offers unpredictable elements.
The interval is where the film enters the conventional crime twist zone. Until then, the proceedings largely stick to the madcap spirit, relying on the idiosyncrasies of the main characters to generate laughs. When Babu and Yesu stage a heroic escape like action heroes, the film wants us to question our assumptions about their presumed incompetence. They suddenly behave like men who Marshall their innate daredevilry when they are cornered.
Sunil's character is the perceived antagonist, while the suspense around the actual villain of the piece remains a mystery to the audience. Vennela Kishore's Yuva is deployed to carry the story forward in the guise of satirising the hyperbolic pre-release events of Telugu movies.
By and by, the comedy quotient wears thin. The second half is not random but the ideas remain underwhelming. The involvement of a celebrity in the crime plot is exciting on paper, but the execution falters.

Performances:

Satya leads the show with his effortless comedy. To his credit, he is neither loud nor repetitive. With a new-age filmmaker like Ritesh Rana, he betters himself. Sri Simha Koduri, also a protagonist, is somewhat rigid but he has improved with time. Vennela Kishore is very good as a film star who is both a victim and a perpetrator. Faria Abdullah's character is not unnecessary but she doesn't get to generate laughs. Rohini Molleti and Raja Chembolu are the serious, efficient faces of the HE Team. Sunil's motionless brand of humour works to an extent.

Technical Departments:

Kaala Bhairava's background score is not unhinged. It is methodical and avoids the trap of randomness. Suresh Sarangam's cinematography is befitting; the high-contrast lighting, the low-key lighting, the muted settings help the visuals attain a certain level of perfection.

Verdict:

Mathu Vadalara 2 is a mixed bag. The first half is well-written and well-performed. The second half, however, should have been pacier and neater. All in all, it’s s decent crime thriller.
