About Spaceman

We often fail to see that the weight of our dreams crushes the things that actually matter in our lives. This is one of the few important topics explored in Johan Renck’s latest film Spaceman. The film is a series of subtle messages that eventually build up to an answer for all the questions a human is looking for in their lives and arrives at an epic culmination that leaves us questioning ourselves, ‘If we ever get a chance to correct our mistakes, what will we do differently?’
Spaceman revolves around the story of an astronaut Jakub who is out in deep space in his quest to unravel the mystery behind a purple cloud that has been covering the earthly skies for over four years. While on his mission, Jakub befriends a sentient space spider capable of making conversations and even shows him the error of his ways. Throughout the film, Jakub’s friend, Hanus by Jakub, beats some sense into and eventually makes him see more than just himself.
The film is a beautiful sequence of not-so-happening events but still important for the messages that they deliver. While the narrative of the film may come across as extremely slow, so slow that sometimes it feels that the time in the film has completely stopped, that only adds to the essence of the film and establishes the theory that space and time are two sides of the same coin. Spaceman is a highly expressive film, and the strength in its expression comes mainly from the discussions that take place between Jakub and Hanus, an eye-opening conversation to be precise.
While the trailer of the film may have come across as a glittery remake of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar mixed with a few elements of Brad Pitt’s Ad Astra, it actually is as far away from both films as possible. One of the very few similarities that Spaceman shares with Interstellar is that the protagonists in both films, played by Adam Sandler and Matthew McConaughey, eventually realised that life is more than just a scientific leap of faith. Similar to Ad Astra and Interstellar, Spaceman also features some extremely stunning visuals of deep space.
Adam Sandler is proving to be an astonishing actor in the later stages of his career, giving us some unforgivable performances in films like Uncut Gems and now Spaceman. There is no doubt that this is one of Adam’s career-best performances with such an accurate representation of a man who is a recluse but still hopeful for a better future. Paul Dano’s contribution to the film is restricted to being the voice of Hanus, though he is never seen in the film there was an eternal sadness oozing out of his voice which was hard to miss. Carey Mulligan’s portrayal of Lenka, Jakub’s pregnant wife, is pretty good considering the low screen time that her character gets.
It appears that Johan Renck is out to prove his mettle as a director as he masterfully finds a way to convey his message and express his emotions in a seemingly void film with very few means to support his cause. However, there were times when the film started losing interest as certain sequences appeared to be irrelevant to the narrative, but an epic Interstellar-like climax that brings everything into place.
