About The Boys Season 4

The goriest, boldest and most offensive superhero web series, based on the best-selling comics by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, is back. The Boys Season 4 kicks off another stage of the show in which the superheroes are the real villains and only a covert group backed by the CIA have a real shot at stopping them. The fan favourite characters like Homelander (Anthony Starr), Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) and Butcher (Karl Uban) return to battle another day. This season though, the tone of the series is a bit more sombre and darker as characters deal with weightier themes than usual.

The Boys Season 4 Review: Plot

Picking up a few storylines from Season 3, Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) is still en route to the Oval office. The Boys are still after Homelander but ever since his son Ryan (Cameron Crovetti) is around, they tread more carefully. This season deals with family issues and trauma as many characters have difficult choices to make. The Seven sees some new entrants which could prove interesting as to how they change the dynamics of the team this season. But throughout it all, Homelander is on a quest to do what he does best, play dirty, especially against former Seven member Starlight (Erin Moriarty).

The Boys Season 4 Review: Writing and Direction

There's a lot of trauma being unpacked this season, in expected ways, especially with the past of several core cast members. And each episode, helmed by different writers and directors, slowly delves into their narratives. The story seems to be getting a bit political as well, ahead of the US's own elections this November. The divide between Starlight and Homelander is an eerie mirror of current American politics, and the introduction of new character Firecracker is proof of that.

The Boys Season 4 Review: Performances

Karl Urban and Anthony Starr headline the series with their alternate paths, but the actors convey their unease at suddenly being adrift well. Valorie Curry and Susan Heyward, as the new Seven members Firecracker and Sister Sage respectively, are intriguing. Jeffery Dean Morgan as Butcher's new boss seems mysterious, but we haven't spent much time with him yet to know his deal. The rest of the returning cast members like Fukuhara, Moriarity, Jack Quaid, Jessie Usher, Laz Alonzo and Tomer Capone get interesting new arcs and we can't wait to see where it leads next. There's also a fun cameo at the beginning of episode two that fans will enjoy.

The Boys Season 4 Review: Critique

Like previous seasons, there are a few scenes that will shock fans and keep them engrossed on social media. But the heart of this character-driven satire is a sharp and poignant drama that pushes boundaries yet again. Now that we know that the series won't end for a while, the war between Butcher and Homelander has definitely lost its urgency. But hey, we're going to some great new reaction gifs to use in return! The rest of the eight-episode The Boys Season 4 will stream weekly until July 18.
