Director Bejoy Nambiar needs no introduction. The man, who has delivered some critically acclaimed films such as Wazir, David, Shaitan and Taish, is next coming up with Por, an exciting action packed drama set in a college.

The Inspiration Behind The Film:

Ask what about the inspiration behind this story and Bejoy replies, "This story is based on a true incident. It happened in a university. It was a small incident which blew up and became a riot. I heard a first-person account of it and I knew right then that this was a story that was meant for films."
Bejoy says that he could not get the story out of his mind and that he kept revisiting the thought of making it a film.
"For almost two years, I kept going back to that incident again and again. I would keep narrating it like how it was narrated to me and when I narrated, I figured there was something interesting in it that could work out. That was how it all started," he explains.
Apart from directing the film, Bejoy has also produced the film in association with Roox Media Madhu Alexander, T-Series and Prabhu Antony.

The Challenge of Making a Bilingual:

Making one film is challenging enough. To have made two films simultaneously - with a different set of actors and completely different set of supporting characters-- is just phenomenal.
Get him to react to this observation and Bejoy says, "Once the decision to make this film was taken, my first choice was to make it in Malayalam. I met some people in Malayalam but it was not working out.
"Then, I started looking at Hindi and while I was doing that, I also met some people in Tamil. I sat with my writers and wondered what if we made this as a Tamil film. That was because this subject is so universal. It is a college film and a college story, people in any university in India will be able to relate to it. Therefore, contextualising was not a problem as long as the content was relatable. That was when we decided to make this as a bilingual," he explains.
Bejoy has a penchant for getting his casting right. In this film too, it looks like the director has struck the bull's eye with regard to casting.
The man responds with a smile. "Fortunate to have got the cast that I have. One of the first persons to come onboard was was Kalidas, then Arjundas, Harshvardhan Rane and finally, Ehan Bhat, he was the last one to get cast."
Bejoy, who agrees that films from the south were getting noticed from all quarters now, points out how suddenly there has been a dearth of college stories now. The man who is know to make socially responsible films, says his upcoming film too will offer entertainment and at the same time, make a meaningful point.
"I always wanted to do a good college film. It is a genre by itself and we don't do enough films for college kids. 'Por' started off as a light college film. I wanted to do a fun college film but as we started developing, we realised that they (students) are the future leaders and changemakers of society.
"So, we cannot refrain from addressing what they are going through like the bigger issues that they deal with on a daily basis or how what is happening in the country is affecting them and how they are responding to it.
"I couldn't ignore all this even though I was looking to make a light film. I realised we had a big responsibility in that aspect. So, we tried to merge that within the packaging. I always try to strike a balance between providing entertainment and some message that I really want to talk about. We have done that in this film also," he signs off with a smile.
