IIT Madras Teams Up With Ilaiyaraaja For A Music Learning And Research Centre

Legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja has associated with the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) to establish a centre for music education called the IITM-Maestro Ilaiyaraaja Centre For Music Learning And Research. The foundation stone for the centre was officially laid by the composer at a special event on May 20.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), on May 20, signed an official MoU with renowned Tamil composer Ilaiyaraaja to establish a centre for music education in a historic association. The new centre will be named the IITM-Maestro Ilaiyaraaja Centre For Music Learning And Research, and will focus on Indian culture, heritage and ethics where students will get to interact with some talented and legendary artistes.

A Special Event

The maestro laid the foundation stone for the IITM - Maestro Ilaiyaraaja Centre for Music Learning and Research on Monday, May 20, at THE inauguration ceremony of the Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY) hosted by IIT-M. Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu too was present at the event.
Speaking at the event, Ilaiyaraaja said there has not been another Mozart even after two centuries. “I wish this centre produces 200 new Ilaiyaraajas,” he said. IIT-M officials said skill development programmes and certification courses on music will be taken up along with the design and analysis of musical instruments at the centre.

Bringing Music And Technology Together

IIT-M director V Kamakoti, while speaking at the inauguration, spoke about the audition of the association. “Lot of technology goes into music composing and to make our youth aware of our rich cultural heritage; we need a lot of innovations too. The centre will bring music and technology together. IIT-M is the first IIT in the country to introduce sports quota and I have plans to introduce ‘culture quota’. I strongly believe that creative and artistic persons should be given an opportunity to study in IIT,” he said.
