Paadhavathi From Mari Selvaraj's Vaazhai Is A Traditional Tamil Oppari Song

On Saturday, August 10, the makers of writer-director Mari Selvaraj's upcoming film Vaazhai took to their social media to release the fourth single from the film titled Paadhavathi. Sung by Jayamoorthy and Meenakshi Elayaraja, the song has lyrics written by Mari Selvaraj, and the music has been composed by Santhosh Narayanan.

The song, which is set in the Oppari style performance in the Tamil folk tradition, is about the separation of a mother from her son, for which the mother calls herself Paadhavathi (the cursed). The accompanying music video has a somber black and white tone that goes with the mood of the song.

Based on the real-life story of the Arjuna Award-winning Kabaddi player, Manathi Ganesan, the film stars Kalaiyarasan, Nikhila Vimal, and Priyanka Nair, among others. With this film, Mari Selvaraj is debuting as a producer. The film will hit the big screens on August 23.

Vaazhai’s technical team includes Theni Eswar as the cinematographer, Suriya Pradhaman on editing. Santhosh Narayanan, who has collaborated earlier with Mari in Karnan and Pariyerum Perumal, is composing the music and background score for Vaazhai as well.

Mari Selvaraj's last directorial outing was Maamannan with Udhayanidhi Stalin, Keerthy Suresh, Vadivelu, and Fahadh Faasil in prominent roles. The director is currently also working with actors Dhruv Vikram and Anupama Parameswaran on a sports drama titled Bison Kaalamaadan. The first schedule of the shoot of the film, which stars Lal, Pasupathy, Rajisha Vijayan, Hari Krishnan, Azhagam Perumal, and Aruvi Madhanand Kalaiyarasan in prominent roles, was wrapped up a few weeks ago, according to an online post by Dhruv Vikram.
