Gaanth Chapter 1:Jamnaa Paar Leaves Us All Knotted Up

Gaanth Chapter 1: Jamnaa Paar was recently released on Jio Cinema but Just why anyone would want to watch another take on the Burari case—that horrific incident of mass suicide in Delhi that shook the world—is a mystery deeper than the one being investigated on screen. This version of the mass suicide case has made several changes in the actual crime, which hardly amounts to the renewability of the plot. For one, the youngest child in the family survives. He is shown to be in the hospital being nursed by an OBC doctor, Sakshi, played by Monica Panwar, an actor of some power who is here seen struggling for her identity, not unlike the series itself, which wants to be true to the actual crime but doesn’t mind opting for wild digressions from the truth. It’s like having the ache and numbing it too.
Gaanth Chapter 1: Jamnaa Paar seems to have been written with one eye on the facts and the other on the sheer mass-appeal value of the incident that had occultist leanings. Lamentably, the presentation lacks vitality. The narrative moves at a snail’s pace and with a discernible absence of grace.
The women are well represented in the plot: there is a female cop played indifferently by Saloni Batra trailing the main protagonist, Gadar Singh, played by Manav Singh, who is a watchable actor at the best of times. This is certainly not one of them.
Gadar Singh drinks and brawls. He is either drunk or angry. And he never smiles. He has a 10-year-old daughter with whom he has imaginary conversations on the phone (or so it seems), while the child lives with her maternal grandparents as Gadar can’t afford to be a responsible father.
It is a miracle that Gadar Singh is given charge of a case as intricate and elusive as this one. The investigation is shown to be lackadaisical and incoherent. The writing is so skimpy that there is little room for the characters to expand with the episodes.
Manav Vij struggles to bring a semblance of credibility to a sketchily written part. But the rest of the cast is not even seen trying to make any sense of their presence in a plot overburdened with characters who have almost nothing to contribute to the overall presentation.
Do yourself a favour: watch the excellent documentary House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths on Netflix. Gaanth is nothing but a feeble, fictionalized facsimile of the original crime. The title suggests there are more such real-life crime incidents coming up. Hopefully, they will be more interesting.
