As Game of Thrones fans prepare for the season two premiere of House of the Dragon this Sunday on June 16, the creator of the worldwide sensation George R.R. Martin has given an exciting update on a potential new series. If everything goes well, there might be a new Game of Thrones prequel to look forward to.

Writer Eboni Booth working on the spin-off

Martin revealed that the Princess Nymeria prequel Ten Thousand Ships has been revived again and making progress under a new writer — Eboni Booth, who won a Pulitzer Prize in May for her play Primary Trust. Congratulating Booth on her Pulitzer win, Martin wrote on his blog, “She’s an amazingly talented young playwright, and a joy to work with; when not writing and producing her prize-winning plays on- and off-Broadway, she has been kept busy by me and HBO, working on a new pilot for Ten Thousand Ships, a Game of Thrones spinoff about Nymeria and the Rhoynar”.

Game of Thrones as well as House of The Dragons are expensive projects and from the looks of it, Ten Thousand Ships won’t be any different. Giving a glimpse of the grandeur of the project, Martin wrote, “We’re all very excited about this one … though we’re still trying to figure out how we’re going to pay for 10,000 ships, 300 dragons and those giant turtles.”

Premise of Ten Thousand Ships

Set a thousand years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series tells the story of warrior queen Princess Nymeria — the founder of the kingdom of Dorne — and the surviving Rhoynars who traveled from Essos to Dorne following their defeat by Valyrian and their dragons.

Did the project change hands?

Writer Brian Helgeland was also working on the script of the spin-off, however, that was scrapped by HBO back in 2022. In an interview with Inverse this year in April, Helgeland had said, “Ten Thousand Ships script “came out great, but I think they felt the period of my show was too far removed from the pillars of the original. That’s why it hasn’t been picked up yet, but nothing is ever dead. My script was based on Queen Nymeria and this little blurb about her that was in a Westeros encyclopedia.”
With this new development, Ten Thousand Ships joins Aegon's Conquest and The Sea Snake as projects that are in development. Before this unexpected declaration by Martin, fans had believed that it had joined the likes of the Jon Snow prequel and gotten indefinitely shelved.
