Besides its six main female leads, the costume drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar has a large ensemble cast who have also contributed to the success of the show. Several supporting cast members from the Netflix series have grabbed the attention of audiences and one such actress is Shruti Sharma, who plays maid and friend to Alamzeb (Sharmin Segal). The soft-spoken actress, who has appeared in television with Namak Issk Ka and with films with the Sanya Malhotra starrer Pagglait, talked about why her character can gains the sympathy of the audience from the get-go.

Shruti Sharma on her character Saima in Heeramandi

In an interview with Zoom, Shruti Sharma discussed why she loved her character Saima so much. She explained, "[Saima's] just a normal person, living in Heeramandi. She has nothing to do with anyone. She has her own life. She's such an innocent soul, so the character which is able to attract the sympathy of the audience, with [the love story of] a normal person and a common man. I love how Saima was written. She was nothing when the show starts."
In the show, Saima is in love with driver Iqbal (Rajat Kaul) and is also a good singer. Manisha Koirala's Mallikajaan doesn't want her to ruin Alamzeb's big debut and puts across an impossible challenge for the couple to complete, thus changing their fate in the universe. Eventually, she leaves Heeramandi and becomes a singing star.
The actress went on to say, "Her life changes because she's a friend of Alam's and [Saima] is talented and beautiful, she suffers a lot and during the fourth episode, when she says, 'I'm not scared anymore,' I loved how she transitions from nothing to becoming a big star. That's something amazing, you don't find that happening in our common world."

For Shruti as well, she was a hopeful actress growing up in Uttar Pradesh and wondering how she could join the industry. The young Shruti could have never imagined that she would get to work on a project as prestigious as Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar.
Sharma said, "I was nothing when I was in Lucknow. I never dreamt that my dream can ever become real working with Sanjay [Leela Bhansali] sir. I was just 12 years old when I performed on Dola Re Dola [from Devdas]. That was my first stage performance. I loved Sanjay sir's work; I am a big fan since then. I never believed that my dream could be real so I can relate to Saima."
