Dussehra 2024

Dussehra which is one of the important Hindu festivals is also known as Vijayadashami. This festival is celebrated at the end of Durga Puja every year. In the Hindu lunisolar calendar, it is celebrated on the tenth day of Ashvin, the seventh month. Usually, the celebration takes place between September and October of the Gregorian calendar.
This year Dussehra will be celebrated on 12th October, 2024 according to the Hindu calendar’s Karthik month.

Why is Dussehra celebrated?

Dussehra is a Hindu festival that is celebrated as a mark of the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana. This day is remembered as the day that Rama slew the rakshasa king Ravana, who had kidnapped Rama's wife, Sita. Sita is abducted by Ravana, who then transports her to his realm in Lanka (modern-day Sri Lanka). When Rama begs Ravana to free her, he refuses, and things get out of hand and turn violent. Previously, for ten millennia, Ravana underwent intense penance and was granted a blessing by the creator-god Brahma, which protected him from being murdered by gods, demons, or spirits going forward. But Rama, who is actually Vishnu in human form, overcomes and kills him, avoiding Brahma's blessing. After a conflict between Rama and Ravana, Rama kills Ravana to put a stop to his terrible rule. As a result of Rama defeating Ravana, dharma was created on Earth. The celebration honors the triumph of good over evil.
Vijayadashami commemorates the day in the Mahabharata when Arjuna, a warrior from the Pandava family, vanquishes the Kauravas. The Pandava brothers, who are said to have spent their thirteenth year of banishment in Matsya, the Virata kingdom, hiding their identities, are the subject of the epic. They are supposed to have stored their heavenly weapons in a Shami tree for a year before traveling to Virata. At this point, the Kauravas made the decision to invade the realm, and Arjuna used the weapons he had taken from the Shami tree to vanquish the Kaurava army as a whole.

Durga Puja Holiday 2024

Hindu mythology holds that the warrior goddess Durga was created by the combined efforts of all the gods in heaven. After gaining a blessing that stated no one could kill him, one of the asuras—evil-minded beings that lived in "pataal lok," or beneath the earth—began making attempts to take over the Gods' home. This made the divine creatures uneasy, and in the end, they were unable to vanquish the crafty asura. The gods banded together to handle this worrying issue and focused their energies and resources on creating Durga, also referred to as the impenetrable.
Mahishasura was drawn to the goddess' flamboyant beauty and wanted to marry her when he first saw her, but the goddess was willing to marry only the man who could vanquish her in combat. Mahishasura was irresponsible in choosing his boon, therefore he forgot to ask women for an exception. After a five-day battle, Durga defeated Mahishasura and restored calm to the home of the gods.

Dussehra 2024 Holiday

Dussehra, or Vijaya Dashami, is a celebration of good triumphing over evil that occurs at the end of Durga Puja. This day represents the victory of justice as it commemorates Goddess Durga's victory over the demonic Mahishasura. With Sindoor Khela and processions, devotees offer the goddess an emotional farewell, immersing her idols in rivers or other bodies of water. Dussehra is a festival marked by the burning of effigies and joyous celebrations honoring Lord Rama's victory over Ravana in the Ramayana. The day symbolizes the victory of virtue and justice by fusing religious devotion with vibrant culture.
