Cholera is a disease that spreads through contaminated water or food. It can cause severe diarrhoea and dehydration and if left untreated, it can turn out to be fatal. With modern sewage and water treatment, cholera has been eliminated in industrialised countries, however, it still exists in Africa, Southeast Asia and Haiti. There’s a high risk of cholera during poverty, war or natural disasters when people are forced to live in crowded conditions.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are 1.3 to 4.0 million cases of cholera every year and 21, 000 to 143, 000 deaths worldwide due to cholera.

Symptoms of Cholera

Cholera might cause mild to moderate diarrhoea. Here, take a look at some of the common symptoms of cholera infection.
  • Diarrhoea: Cholera-related diarrhoea will happen suddenly and can quickly cause fluid loss.
  • Nausea and vomiting: Vomiting occurs especially in the early stages of cholera and can last for hours.
  • Dehydration: Dehydration might develop within hours after cholera symptoms start and range from mild to severe.
  • Irritability, fatigue, sunken eyes, a dry mouth, extreme thirst, dry and shrivelled skin
Due to dehydration, there can be electrolyte imbalance which can cause the following symptoms.
  • Muscle cramps: This happens when there’s a rapid loss of salts from your body.
  • Shock: This is one of the most serious complications of dehydration. It happens when low blood volume causes a drop in blood pressure and a drop in the amount of oxygen in your body.

Complications of Cholera

Cholera can turn out to be fatal as it causes rapid loss of large amounts of fluids and electrolytes. However, in cases of shock, people can die within a few hours. Here, take a look at some of the other complications of cholera.
  • Low blood sugar: Also known as hypoglycemia, low levels of blood sugar can be dangerous because it is your body’s main source of energy. Children are at greatest risk of this complication as it can cause seizures, unconsciousness and even death.
  • Low potassium: People suffering from cholera lose minerals including potassium. Low levels of potassium can affect heart and nerve function and can be life-threatening.
  • Kidney failure: When the kidneys lose their ability to filter out waste, excess amounts of fluids, electrolytes and wastes tend to build up in the body which becomes a life-threatening condition. In people with cholera, kidney failure often accompanies shock.
