An alert by the Food Standards Agency led to the action when traces of Listeria monocytogenes were found in some of the products

UK’s health monitoring agency has recalled a range of sandwiches, wraps, baguettes, and other chilled foods on sale across the country in a listeria health scare. According to doctors, eating contaminated food can put you at risk of a nasty illness called listeriosis which causes meningitis, encephalitis, or severe sepsis. Listeriosis can infect many parts of the body, including the brain, spinal cord membranes, or the bloodstream.
An alert by the Food Standards Agency or FSA led to the action when traces of Listeria monocytogenes were found in some of the products. Notice also said there will be signs will be placed in shops where the cold items are sold to warn people they should not be consumed.
The Sun reported that according to the FSA notice, ready-to-eat foods made branded Bread Spread, Orbital Foods, and Perfect Bite and with a use-by date between 10/05/2024 and 18/05/2024 are "unsafe to eat".

What is listeria?

According to doctors, the incubation period for listeriosis varies from one person to another. It usually takes one to two weeks, but it can be as short as a couple of days or three months. Experts say cold foods are more prone to the bacteria monocytogenes as they survive and even multiply in low temperatures, including refrigerators and freezers. The bacteria can multiply to dangerous levels during storage. Spoiled food usually breaks down and develops an unpleasant smell, taste, or change in texture. However, when L. monocytogenes bacteria contaminate food, the smell, taste, and texture do not change.

Who does listeriosis affect?

Experts say even though anyone can get listeriosis, it is not as dangerous for those with a healthy immune system. Those who are at the greatest risk of becoming very ill or dying include:
  • Those who are pregnant
  • Developing fetuses
  • People 65 years or older
  • Those with a weakened immune system

Signs and symptoms

A few signs and symptoms of listeriosis include:
  • Fever and chills
  • Headache
  • Upset stomach
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Muscle aches
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance.
  • Convulsions or muscle contractions that you cannot control
According to experts, a severe listeriosis infection can spread to your bloodstream or brain and lead to sepsis, a life-threatening condition.

Ways to treat listeriosis

Doctors say there is a cure for listeriosis, as they mostly prescribe antibiotics to rid your body of the infection. Your doctor is also most likely to prescribe antibiotics to babies or if you are pregnant, 65 years of age or older, or have a weakened immune system. Antibiotics commonly used to treat listeriosis include ampicillin. Doctors also prescribe medication to manage specific symptoms, including nausea and vomiting.
However, if your symptoms are mild, you may not need any treatment. So, to manage the symptoms, you must rest, drink lots of fluids, and eat a light diet along with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to manage fever and relieve muscle aches.
