Common Cancer-Causing Carcinogens In Your House You Should Be Wary Of

Cancer is one of the most common causes of death among people globally. However, who would think that your home - a place considered to be completely safe, could turn into a source of cancer? Let’s look at how everyday household items are carcinogenic.

When a carcinogen changes your DNA, it triggers a chain reaction that turns normal cells into cancerous cells

Cancer today is a household name. Due to the increase in number of cases across the world, experts say it is important to educate people about this dreadful and deadly disease, which claims millions of lives every year.
Doctors say lifestyle factors like diet, sedentary life, and polluted and toxic environments around us are the leading causes of cancer today.
And so, while it is not possible to eliminate exposure to toxins in many cases, you can at least try to avoid them and safeguard your health by making mindful choices.
Many carcinogenic substances are found in everyday household items that increase your risk of cancer. Studies say more than 100 known carcinogens - which may be physical like ultraviolet rays from the sun; chemicals like asbestos; or biological, such as infections caused by certain viruses are around us.
"We can make our homes healthier for our family and ourselves by being aware of these commonplace objects and choosing wisely to limit exposure. Recall that even little adjustments can have a significant impact on lowering our risk of cancer and improving our general health," Dr. Kanav Kumar, a Surgical Oncologist at the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar, Head and Neck Cancer Institute of India, told Times Now.

Cancer-causing daily household items

Doctors say just because you had contact with a carcinogen, it does not mean that you will get cancer. Your chance of getting sick depends on many things and how much you have been exposed to it. A lot of times, your genes also play a role.
A few things you need to pay attention to are many household items that are used daily.

Non-stick cookware

Pans, coated with Teflon make cooking and cleaning a breeze, but they also release harmful perfluorinated chemicals when heated at high temperatures. "Cast-iron or ceramic cookware are safer substitutes," said Dr. Kanav.

Plastic containers

Plastic food storage containers are extremely popular as they come in handy and are cheap. However, they are loaded with bisphenol A or BPA and phthalates - both of which are known carcinogens.
And so, make sure to use glass or stainless-steel containers instead.

All-purpose cleaners

There are many all-purpose cleaning products available in the market which usually contain detergents, grease-cutting agents, solvents, and disinfectants.
The specific chemicals in these ingredients include ammonia, ethylene glycol monobutyl acetate, sodium hypochlorite, or trisodium phosphate, which can also irritate your skin, eyes, nose, and throat. "Seek out non-toxic, environmentally friendly substitutes or create your own cleaning solutions with basic components like baking soda and vinegar."

Scented candles

Scented candles are made using petroleum, perfumes, and paraffin, as the ingredients make their production simple but more importantly, a cheap process. "Toluene and benzene, two substances linked to cancer, are released as candles burn. Select natural alternatives, such as soy or beeswax candles, to lessen exposure,"
said Dr. Kanav.
And so, when these candles are burned, the heat produced differs little from the exhaust fumes of cars or the smoke from cigarettes.

PVC shower curtains

According to studies, there is a correlation between exposure to vinyl chloride and the onset of cancer. Vinyl chloride is found in air and as a reaction to heating.

Cigarette smoke

If there is a smoker in your house, their cigarette smoke can become trapped in curtains and carpets, which then acts as a source of the chemical cadmium - a carcinogen.
Even though the smoke may have long dissipated, the cadmium in the smoke can be trapped in carpets and curtains, making everyone living in the house at great risk of cancer.

How do carcinogens cause cancer?

According to doctors, there is a deep relationship between carcinogens and your genetic makeup. Your DNA is in your genes, which helps make proteins. Proteins control millions of actions, including the way your cells grow and multiply.
And so, when a carcinogen changes your DNA, it triggers a chain reaction that turns normal cells into cancerous cells.
Depending on the specific mutation or change, your genes start giving cells instructions to multiply uncontrollably, becoming cancerous tumours or blood cancer.
However, doctors say cancer does not develop right away and carcinogens build up over time. It may take years before a carcinogen in your body begins the chain reaction that leads to cancer.
