According to a report in Express.co.uk, reacting to a video where an online fitness coach said “walking will literally get you so frickin’ lean and shredded,” Dr Sood said, “Yes, the more you walk, the more calories you will burn. But you don't need to walk 10,000 steps to get the health benefits.”
People are confused as to how many steps they should walk every day to see the benefits and also lose weight. Dr Sood spoke about a study, published in JAMA in 2019, which showed elderly women who walked around 4,400 steps per day had a lower risk of death - and the benefits continued up to 7,500 steps, ‘before they levelled off’.
Dr Sood says that if a person walks 10,000 steps per day, they will burn nearly 400 to 500 calories, however, the health benefits of walking are beyond just weight loss.
He added, “This includes reducing your risk of heart disease and stroke, decreasing your risk of osteoporosis, improving your overall mood because of endorphin release, slowing down the ageing process of your brain, improving sleep quality and reducing your risk of osteoarthritis.”
