The previous world record in the Guinness Book stands as a spleen of 73.66 cm and weighing 2.3 kg

Doctors in a Mumbai hospital successfully removed a giant 8.5 kg spleen from a 37-year-old man's abdomen, ending his 17 years suffering. According to doctors, the spleen that was taken out measures 3 feet x1.5 feet, 90 cm in size, as the man suffered from Massive Splenomegaly. A spokesperson from Wockhardt Hospital, where the surgery was performed, said the previous world record in the Guinness Book stands as a spleen of 73.66 cms and weighing 2.3 kg.

The surgery went on for six hours

Doctors said the patient Rajkumar Tiwari underwent a six-hour long surgery with no pre or post-operative complications and is on his way to recovery. Explaining the challenges, Dr. Imran Shaikh, who conducted the surgery said that Tiwari had been suffering from a condition known as massive splenomegaly, also known as an enlarged spleen and hematopoiesis - the process of blood cell production, which takes place in the bone marrow, since the age of 18 years.
Since then, Tiwari has been suffering from abdominal tightness, pains, fatigue which eventually restricted his movements and prevented him from performing normal activities. "Massive splenomegaly with hypersplenism is a rare disorder, and due to the enormous size of the spleen and its over-function, carries a risk to the patient. Enlarged spleen starts killing blood cells prematurely leading to low hemoglobin, white blood cells (WBC), and platelet count," Dr. Shaikh told the media.
Dr. Sheikh said Tiwari could not walk, climb, sit, or stand, and was exhausted and bedridden, completely dependent on his family members. Not treating him at the right time could have been risky leading to spontaneous bleeding.
The patient was then planned for abdominal angiography and embolization of the splenic artery. In this procedure, the main blood supply to the spleen was blocked by putting coils in the artery to avoid the killing of transfused blood products. Post-coiling embolization the doctors transfused blood products to carry out surgery and increase the safety margin for patients.

How dangerous is an enlarged spleen?

According to experts, an enlarged spleen is a common occurrence that reduces the number of healthy red blood cells, platelets, and white cells in your bloodstream, leading to frequent infections. Your spleen, located in the upper left part of the abdomen, just below the left rib cage, plays an important role in the immune system and hematopoiesis and is affected by many conditions, including:
  • Infections like mononucleosis, HIV, tuberculosis, endocarditis, malaria, and toxoplasmosis
  • Liver disease
  • Cancers
  • Blood or lymph system conditions
  • Parasites
