Neeraj Chopra has informed he will miss the 63rd Ostrava Golden Spike 2024 athletics meet after he felt something in his adductor muscle. The event is scheduled to be held in Czechia on May 28.
“Hello everyone! Following a recent throwing session, I decided not to compete in Ostrava as I felt something in my adductor,” Neeraj clarified through social media. “I have had problems with it in the past and pushing it at this stage can lead to injury. Just to clarify I am not injured but I don’t want to take any risk during the Olympic year so had to take this decision,” he wrote.
The Olympic gold medalist javelin thrower has clarified that he is not injured, but pulled out of the Ostrava as a precautionary measure to keep himself risk-free in the Olympic year.

What is an adductor injury?

Also known as groin strain, an adductor injury is a stretch or tear to one of the muscles in the inner thigh that runs from your pelvic bone to the knee. According to doctors, these muscles allow the hip and leg to move inward and keep the trunk steady.
Adductor injuries are common in athletes, especially those who play high-intensity sports like football, rugby, hockey, soccer, basketball, tennis, or baseball. They can also be caused by falls on ice, splitting the legs, or explosive movements like jumping or changing direction.
Experts say this underlying injury is most often a muscle or tendon strain at the insertion of the tendon of the adductor muscle to the bone. The proximal attachment of the adductor muscle contributes to an anatomical pathway across the anterior pubic symphysis that is likely required to withstand the transmission of large forces during multidirectional athletic activities. Its lack of mechanical advantage may make it more susceptible to strain.

Signs and symptoms

The main sign of groin strain is intense pain in the groin area. Apart from that, a few others include:
  • Tendinous rupture and avulsion
  • Severe pain in the inner thigh
  • Difficulty moving your leg or hip
  • Bruising and tenderness in the area
According to doctors, tenderness along the muscle belly brings three stages of this injury, which include:

Grade 1

It shows no loss of function or strength. Muscle tears show normal appearances or a small area of focal disruption with hematoma

Grade 2

This shows severe pain with weakness and muscle fiber disruption but does not affect the whole muscle belly. In acute grade 1 or 2 strains of the adductor muscle, there is intense pain in the groin area, like a sudden stab with a knife. Also, it can cause hemorrhage and swelling a few days after the injury.

Grade 3

This causes a complete muscle tear and complete functional loss in which injuries are complete muscle tears with frayed margins and bunching and retraction of the torn muscle fibers.

Ways to treat adductor injuries

According to experts, a few ways to treat adductor injuries include:
  • Rest
  • Ice compression
  • Elevation
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Surgery
  • Rehabilitation
Doctors say tears around the mid-belly of the muscle are easier to rehabilitate than those closer to the tendon at the top of the muscle. Injuries near the tendon are slower to heal and can also become chronic. Also, you may need to use crutches or a walker for the first few days after a groin strain if you are having trouble walking or moving safely.
