Busting Common Myths Around Heart health by A Doctor

There are many causes of heart attacks and unless you follow medical news closely, you may have misconceptions about the risk factors

Believing in outdated ideas about something as serious as your heart can be risky. There are many causes of heart attacks and unless you follow medical news closely, you may have misconceptions about the risk factors. According to experts, heart Health is often not taken as seriously until someone close to us or we face some symptoms ourselves. “The reason might be a lack of awareness or the misconceptions surrounding it,” Dr. Geetanjali Gupta, Director of Technical Operations and Quality Assurance, at Redcliffe Labs, Told Times Now.
Dr. Gupta also highlights that the biggest reason for prevailing heart health issues across the world and among all age groups is ignorance of quality living, wrong eating habits, and a sedentary lifestyle. “The youth today is stuck to their couches, despite sitting is equated with equivalent risks to that of smoking by increasing the cardiometabolic health issues,” she said.
However, getting over the myths and having the right understanding of preserving heart health can lead to significant control of the ever-increasing heart risks in India, which were significantly raised by 12.5 per cent in 2022 alone, and are yet not controlled.
Here are a few commonly held but mistaken beliefs, replacing which with truths will give you the information you need so you and your doctor can plan the best path to a healthy heart.

Myth 1

If you have smoked for years, quitting now would do nothing.

Fact

Quitting smoking at any age can improve your heart health, thereby reducing a major cause of heart disease. “This is a myth that quitting won’t help. Quitting just after one year can help drop the risks of heart disease by 5 per cent and in 10 years, there will be no signs,” informed Dr. Gupta.
So, it is essential to take measures for a better lifestyle and well-being will follow.

Myth 2

Heart disease lies in the family, so you cannot prevent it.

Fact

A healthy lifestyle prevents the risk of hereditary heart disease as well. According to Dr. Gupta, even in the rarest cases, a change in your daily habits can at least delay the onset of heart health disorders, which leads to a longer and healthier life. “The family hereditary myth doesn’t lie in the stone. You can prevent it with a healthy diet, regular exercise, and managing blood pressure,” she said.

Myth 3

Cholesterol-control medicines can eliminate the risks of heart disease.

Fact

Food that is loaded with saturated fats increases cholesterol levels. So, just taking medicines to reduce it will not give you the right to eat unhealthy foods, instead, can increase the risks of heart health. So, while you are managing any medical condition, it is equally important to stay focused on improving your lifestyle and developing good eating habits. “Prioritize food choices as a source of energy or body essentials and not based on unhealthy cravings that might harm your own body,” said Dr. Gupta.

Myth 4

Those who exercise regularly are at no risk of heart issues.

Fact

Exercising but with an unhealthy lifestyle can deteriorate heart health. There are too many cases of cardiac arrests in young people while gymming, running, or even singing. So, heart diseases may affect anyone with a poor lifestyle, irregular sleep patterns, and a sedentary lifestyle.

Myth 5

Vitamins keep your heart healthy.

Fact

Vitamins and supplements help boost your heart health but they are not a sure-shot protection from diseases and ailments. No study claims that vitamin supplements completely cure heart health.
