Liver Doctor Sounds Alarm Over Influencer Endorsing Alcohol Before Workout

X’s (formerly Twitter) popular Liver Doctor has warned against fitness influencers supporting drinking alcohol before working out as a way to promote better blood flow. Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips said there is no safe level of alcohol that benefits and advised never to mix alcohol with exercise, as it can lead to heart attack.

According to Dr. Philips, any amount of alcohol is dangerous for your health and can cause cardiac arrest

New Delhi: Popular hepatologist Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips warned against a fitness influencer’s post endorsing drinking alcohol before a workout.
“Please don't drink alcohol There is no safe level of alcohol that benefits health. Most importantly, please don't mix alcohol with your pre-workout, it could give you a cardiac arrest,” Dr. Philips wrote on X (formerly Twitter) after an influencer shared his video promoting small amounts of alcohol as a pre-workout drink for better blood flow.
According to Dr. Philips, any amount of alcohol is dangerous for your health and can cause cardiac arrest.
Dr. Philips’ warning came as various studies have reiterated time and again that no amount of alcohol is good for health, and can cause various ailments, including cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, breast, liver, colon, and rectum.
A recent study by the World Cancer Research Fund and American Institute for Cancer Research said drinking can also cause inflammation of the liver and lead to scarring - a potentially fatal disease. It can also increase blood pressure and damage heart muscle. 1
The International Agency for Research on Cancer also said that both the ethanol in alcohol and acetaldehyde - a chemical formed from the breakdown of ethanol, are carcinogenic to humans in high amounts.
“Alcohol increases blood flow because your body is under stress to throw it out of your body,” Dr. Philips added in the post.

How does drinking contribute to heart disease?

There has been a growing concern regarding youngsters dying of heart attacks right after exercising and working out in the gym. Many of these include the deaths of celebrities including Siddhanth Suryavanshi and Raju Srivastav, who succumbed while working out.
Drinking, especially before exercising can cause high blood pressure, which spikes a person’s risk of a heart attack. The Centers for Disease Control And Prevention also defines drinking as consuming eight or more drinks per week for women or 15 or more drinks per week for men.
It also defines excessive drinking as consuming four or more drinks in a single session for women or five or more drinks in a single session for men.

Effect of alcohol on weight loss

Apart from heart health, alcohol, which contains empty calories, also gives a big setback to weight loss and weight management goals.
According to a study done to show how drinking affects working out, muscle building and recovery, also known as protein synthesis, decreases by 37 per cent if you drink alcohol.
Many times, when you reach for an alcoholic drink, you mix it with a sugary liquid, such as juice, to amplify the taste. Drinking sugary drinks after a workout stops the fat-burning process, leaving you back to where you were before you put all of that hard work into the gym.
Also, since working out leaves you dehydrated due to the sweat excreted during each exercise, alcohol can enhance the problem, causing exhaustion and fatigue.
Dehydration from both exercise and alcohol can lead to a hangover, and when you have a hangover complimenting fatigue, your chances of going to the gym the next day are slim to none.
