Popular fashion and beauty influencer Surbhi Jain died after a prolonged battle with ovarian cancer. The 30-year-old social media star had a remission of this deadly cancer for the second time last year and was undergoing treatment.
In her last post around a month back, Surbhi updated her health condition, saying she was battling complications and was put on an IV tube for feeding.
“The past two months I have spent mostly in the hospital. There have been some complications because of which my food has also been stopped and I have a tube attached through my nose. So, I am on continuous IV. Treatment is going on, (but) it is difficult, and I just want all this to end,” her post read.
Surbhi had been vocal about the diagnosis she received three years back. Having been told by the doctors that she would not be able to conceive, Surbhi had two back-to-back surgeries, in which her ovaries were removed.

What is ovarian cancer?

Ovarian cancer starts in your ovaries – that lie in the female reproductive system where eggs form. According to doctors, ovarian cancer is difficult to detect because symptoms often do not develop until later stages.
Doctors treat this cancer with surgery, chemotherapy, and other cancer treatments.

Early signs and symptoms you should take note of

Doctors say ovarian cancer develops and spreads throughout your abdomen before it causes any symptoms, making early detection difficult.
However, a few noticeable signs would include:
  • Pelvic or abdominal pain, discomfort, or bloating
  • Changes in your eating habits, getting full early, and losing your appetite
  • Vaginal discharge or abnormal bleeding, especially if the bleeding occurs outside of your typical menstrual cycle or after you have gone through menopause
  • Bowel changes like diarrhoea or constipation
  • An increase in the size of your abdomen.
  • Peeing more often

What causes this cancer and how does it spread?

Doctors say they do not know the exact cause of ovarian cancer, but many people have a slightly higher risk of developing the condition. Ovarian cancer risk factors include:
  • Being over the age of 60
  • Obesity
  • A family history of ovarian cancer or inheriting a gene mutation with BRCA1 or BRCA2
  • Never being pregnant or having children later in life
  • Endometriosis
According to doctors, there is also an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer as you grow older.
Experts say ovarian cancer spreads usually from your pelvis to your lymph nodes, abdomen, intestines, stomach, chest, or liver.

How can you prevent ovarian cancer remission?

According to statistics, more than 80 per cent of women who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer go into remission after their initial treatment, but around 60 per cent will then have a recurrence.
Maintenance therapy helps delay a cancer recurrence or reduce the risk of it recurring at all and involves using specialized medications to maintain remission.
Doctors say maintenance therapy is started right after the initial surgery and chemotherapy are complete.
Also, experts say it is important for women to schedule regular visits for surveillance of ovarian cancer and to be aware of the risk of a recurrence.
