Do’s And Don’ts To Prevent Health Hazards During Rains in Chennai

Drink Filtered Water

Always try to drink filtered or boiled water. During the rainy seasons, there’s an increase in waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid because drinking water tends to mix with contaminated floodwater.

Avoid Floodwater

Try and stay away from floodwaters. Don’t even walk through floodwater as they tend to be contaminated with harmful bacteria and chemicals. This water can lead to skin infection and other skin and health issues.

Maintain Food Hygiene

Be cautious about the food you eat. Make sure that it is cooked thoroughly. Also, avoid street food because the high humidity levels can increase the risk of food spoilage and contamination which can eventually lead to food poisoning.

Use Mosquito Repellents

Use mosquito repellents and wear long-sleeved clothing to prevent mosquito bites. Moonsoon and rains create the prefect breeding grounds for mosquitoes. These mosquitoes then spread diseases such as dengue, malaria and Zika virus.

Keep Surroundings Clean

Make sure to keep your surroundings clean. Don’t let water accumulate in your surrounding areas as this can help prevent mosquito breeding. Also, get your gutters and drains cleaned regularly to avoid water logging which can a potential breeding site for mosquitoes.

Maintain Personal Hygiene

The increase in humidity levels can lead to fungal infections. It is important to keep your body clean and dry at all times. Also, try and keep your feet dry at all times, especially between the toes where there might be fungal growth.

Avoid Getting Wet

Avoid getting wet in the rain as much as you can. However, if you do get wet, make sure to change your clothes immediately to prevent illness and fever.

Take Vitamin C

You can increase your Vitamin C intake. Vitamin C helps to boost your immune system which can help you fight diseases and infections that tend to increase during the rainy season.

Eat Probiotic Foods

Make sure to add probiotic foods to your diet during the rainy season. A lot of times, your gut health is affected due to the weather. However, probiotic foods can promote the growth of good bacteria in the gut which can help in maintaining a healthy gut microbiome, thereby, preventing any digestive issues.
