Popular Morning Drink That Can Damage Your Tooth Enamel

Your oral health is more than just brushing or flossing. It is also important that you eat well as your food and drinks too have an impact on your teeth and gums. From avoiding sugary foods and drinks to not eating highly acidic foods, it is important that you keep a check on your dietary habits as it can help to improve your dental health.
Dr Andrej Bozic, an oral surgeon at Dentum has warned against the drinking of highly acidic lemon water as it can affect your teeth. Lemon water is known for the Vitamin C present in it and its detoxifying properties. Therefore, a lot of people drink this in the morning. According to a report in Mirror.co.uk, Dr Bozic, “Lemon juice has a pH level of around 2, which is very acidic.
“This acidity can erode the enamel on your teeth, which is the hard, protective outer layer.”
Erosion of your teeth enamel is irreversible and can lead to a lot of dental issues. Dr Bozic said, “Once the enamel is worn away, it doesn't grow back. Your teeth become more vulnerable to cavities and damage.”
He doesn’t say that one should avoid lemon water completely, however, one can take the necessary steps to prevent enamel erosion. He said, “The frequency and duration of exposure are key factors in enamel erosion.
“Sipping on lemon water throughout the day or letting it linger in your mouth can amplify the damage.”
He says that one should use a straw to “reduce the contact between the acidic lemon water and your teeth, helping to prevent enamel erosion”. He also suggests that one should rinse their mouth after drinking lemon water as this neutralises the acid and wash away any residues. He also says, “Avoid brushing immediately after drinking lemon water; wait at least 30 minutes to allow the enamel to re-harden.”
Dr Bozic also recommends the use of fluoride toothpaste. “Fluoride helps strengthen your enamel and provides extra protection against acid erosion.”
If you don’t take the necessary steps, it can lead to irreversible enamel erosion. Here, take a look at how enamel erosion affects dental health.

Increased Tooth Sensitivity

Enamel erosion exposes the underlying dentin which has tubules that lead to the tooth’s nerve. This increases your sensitivity to hot, cold, sweet and acidic foods and drinks, leading to pain and discomfort.

Tooth Decay

Tooth enamel acts as a protective barrier against bacteria and acids. When it erodes, your teeth become more vulnerable to cavities and decay as the softer dentin underneath is likely to get affected by bacterial attacks and acid damage.

Discolouration

Eroded enamel reveals the yellowish dentin beneath. This makes your teeth less pleasing and your teeth may appear more yellow and lose their natural shine.

Wear and Tear

Enamel erosion leads to thinner teeth, making them more prone to chipping, cracking and breaking. This can cause structural damage and one might have to undergo restorative procedures.

Gum Recession

As the enamel wears away, it can aggravate gum recession, exposing more of the tooth root. This not only increases sensitivity but also increases the risk of periodontal diseases.
