Signs Of Throat Cancer That Can Be Mistaken For Common Cold

Cancer symptoms are often mistaken for common health issues which are often overlooked. This eventually leads to the condition progressing to advanced stages where it spreads to other parts of the body, making it difficult to treat and cure the cancer. Therefore, it is important that you speak to your doctor when you spot symptoms frequently or if they persist for long.
When David Davies, 44, spotted the early symptoms, he did not pay much heed to it as he thought he was feeling “under the weather” with a virus. However, later when he went to see a doctor, he was diagnosed with incurable throat cancer.

Early symptoms

Speaking to Express.co.uk Jack Davies, his oldest son, 17, said that his father’s first symptoms were:
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Lump on the side of his neck
  • A hoarse voice.
After spotting these symptoms, David went for an emergency appointment on January 26 wherein the doctors referred him to the head and neck department. The doctors here suspected that the lump in his neck was cancerous and hence asked him to get a few tests done which included endoscopy, MRI scans and more. These tests helped the doctors diagnose him with throat cancer.
However, after a PET scan was done, the doctors told him that his cancer had spread from his head and neck to his right iliac lymph nodes, therefore, becoming incurable.
The report says that David’s cancer was supposed to be treated with three cycles of induction chemotherapy and then radiotherapy, but he is now being moved to a palliative course of treatment with immunotherapy. In the hope of slowing the spread of the cancer, David started this immunotherapy course.
Jack said, “When my dad attended his first appointment with the head and neck consultant, he was quite positive about the fact he could be treated with a course of radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery to remove the affected tonsil.
“[But] when he heard the news that his cancer is now incurable, he felt like his whole world had ended. [He was] angry, [and] confused; and felt like he was now unable to have the future and retirement he had always hoped for.”

Other subtle signs of throat that you might mistake for a common cold:

Difficulty in Swallowing

Experiencing difficulty or discomfort when swallowing which is often described as a feeling of a lump in the throat can indicate conditions such as throat infections or inflammations, which are similar to symptoms of cold. However, this symptom might not improve with over-the-counter cold remedies.

Unexplained Weight Loss

Losing weight without trying might not be immediately connected to a throat issue but in combination with other subtle signs, it can indicate a more serious condition.

Ear Pain

While ear pain can be a symptom of the common cold, persistent pain that occurs primarily during swallowing can be a sign of throat issues, as the pain can spread from the throat to the ear through shared nerve pathways.

Persistent Sore Throat

A sore throat that lasts longer than the typical duration of a cold, especially if it persists for more than two weeks without improvement, could be a sign of a more serious throat condition.
