When you are overweight, people around you make you feel bad about your physique, and the way you look, and bully you for the way you are. It can burn your confidence and can even take a toll on your mental health. Though all these things were affecting Nehal’s mental peace, she didn’t stop. After being bullied for years and facing many physical and mental health problems Nehal Kansara decided to shut everyone up with her massive weight loss transformation. Nehal, 26, transformed herself from 120 kgs to 62 kgs in two years. But what must have inspired her to go on this weight loss journey? She shares her weight loss journey exclusively with Times Now. While pursuing her MBA, at the age of 23, she started getting health issues like knee pain and fatigue. Further, she was bullied by fellow mates in school and college which led to low confidence. Seeing Nehal dealing with physical and mental health problems, her parents also got worried and supported her in every possible way. So instead of letting things affect her, Nehal decided to give gymming a shot.
She started seeing results as she lost 3-4 kgs in a month, and then the game changed. During lockdown, she put all her energy and focus into transforming herself. From getting up at 4 am for a run to continuing strength training at night, she was 35 kgs down by the end of lockdown. With her rigorous workout routine, she also cut down on junk food and shifted to healthy homemade recipes.
Biggest Challenges Faced During Weight Loss Transformation:
Nehal shares that the biggest challenge she faced during the entire journey was the ‘Weight Loss plateau.’ “It takes a lot of effort to break this plateau, and this happened to me every few months, So these are the things I did to break it:
- If I am walking 10,000 steps I would walk 12,000 steps
- If my workout routine was 1.5 hours, I increased it to 2 hours
- I would get up and walk every hour
- I ate salads before my meals
- I reduced my calories by 100."
“Another challenge I faced was people talking bad about me. At one point there was so much negativity by my relatives- because people actually can't see an improved version of you, ignorance was kind of difficult, but I did and focused on my work,” Nehal said.
How Did Nehal Stay Motivated Throughout Her Journey?
“First of all 'Motivation' comes from the inner self, this was the quote I reminded myself everyday, there was a time I actually needed a break and I took it and got back again stronger. The most difficult part is just the beginning, when you lose 10-15 kgs, it just becomes a habit. I focused on building a lifestyle rather than just a ‘short-term goal.’ My motivation was getting up everyday and reminding myself that I needed to be an improved version of what I am today. This helped me a lot in pushing myself,” Nehal said.
“It has completely changed my life. Now all my focus is on building myself. It has also improved my relationships with my family members, friends, and relatives. With working out and eating healthy, I feel positive and energetic throughout the day and I feel more productive than before,” she further added.
Diet And Exercise Regime Followed During Transformation Journey
Nehal followed a very simple and sustainable method for her weight loss journey. She made it a lifestyle rather than just doing it for her short-term goals.
Breakfast: In her breakfast, she usually eats Protein oats (Oats + chia seeds + 1 scoop protein powder + whey + dry fruits). She sometimes prefers having a Chia seed smoothie or just simple Besan Cheela with veggies with 1 scoop of protein.
Lunch: Instead of wheat roti, she has multigrain roti, sabzi and one portion of protein (It could be dal, rajma, chole) with some salad and yoghurt or chaas.
Evening Snacks: Her evening snacks included 1 fruit along with some makhana or chana.
Dinner: Her dinner is usually very light like Paneer salad, mixed vegetable soup with tofu, or sauteed veggies with quinoa and paneer.
If she has sugar cravings, she eats sugar-free ice cream.
Workout Regime:
To lose weight, she indulges herself in strength training and functional workouts.
Monday: Back and Bicep workout, 10 mins abs with 20 mins cross trainer
Tuesday: Legs and glutes workout with 10 minute inclined walk.
Wednesday: Chest, tricep, shoulder workout with 10 mins abs and 10 mins cycling
Thursday: Functional exercises with HIIT (Rope, Jumping jacks, Jump squats)
Friday: 4 km Run with Arm exercises
Advice To Others Looking To Embark On Similar Transformation Journey:
Nehal’s piece of advice includes the following:
1. Join a good gym or just do 1 hour of any physical activity (yoga, running, walking or strength training)
2. Don’t keep junk at home, this would lead to more cravings.
3. Eat balanced meals- (with pros, fat and carbs) this would keep you full for longer and you won't feel hungry
4. Drink 1 glass of water before every meal so that you don’t overeat
5. Avoid Sugar and fried foods completely.
6. Walk 10,000 steps everyday and focus on meditation.
She lastly says, “If I can do it, You can too!”
